Are 12' deep cabinets with inset drs deep enough?
Comments (2)How deep you need the cabinets is your preference. If you want to make sure that your current dishes fit, you should measure the diameter of your plates and the thickness of the cabinet doors you ordered as well as the depth of the cabinets. The thickness of the doors is the inset and that has to be subtracted from the depth of the cabinet to get the true *usable* depth of the cabinet. The cabinet maker suggested that I have cabinets deep enough to fit a 12" plate, even though my current plates are only 11". The cabinets are 13.5" deep with a 3/4" inset (thickness of door). So, theoretically I could fit 12.5" plates if I wanted to. Hope that explanation made sense....See MoreCould a 12inch deep cabinet be reconfigured to a 24inch deep?
Comments (3)And just for the record....it can be added to as well (but in the middle of a run casey's idea is much better!!) I had a 15" deep cabinet with exposed sides turned into an 18" deep cabinet. It's nearly invisable (if I tell people where to look they see it, but normally no one can tell). But it was a bit pricy. Not as expensive as a new cab would have been (it was an antique and solid walnut) but it can be done by a professional. Again....no need in your case but I thought i'd share. Comments (1)I have 13" deep cabinets. We installed wood behind the vent to pull it out about an inch, making sure that we mounted over studs and then mounted the vent to that. We had a metal shop cut a 2" strip the width of the vent and then bend it at 1" so that it covered the wood at the gap and then tucked up between the vent and wood to make sure there was no gap. The tile splash covers the back edge. You could do the same thing, but would need a wider trim strip. You could also do a custom hood....See MoreHusband ordered 15 inch deep upper Ikea cabinets-- too deep??
Comments (20)We have 15" deep uppers on one side of our Kitchen with standard depth base cabinets (24"D) and counters (~25.5"D) - we have no issues and I don't notice them when I'm working in front of them - and we're a tall family (I'm 5'10" - the shortest!) We have 12" deep uppers on the other side of the Kitchen and I wish we had gone with 15" deep on that side as well! I work primarily on the side with the 15" deep uppers (our Prep & Cooking Zones). Regarding the depth - it should be 18" from the bottom of the light rail to the finished counter so standard small appliances will fit under the upper cabinets. Most countertop small appliances (mixers, coffeemakers, etc.) are designed to fit with an 18" backsplash. If you want to go higher, consider whether you can reach the cabinets (as was mentioned earlier). I probably wouldn't go much higher if you plan to sell in a short time. Lily'sMom - IKEA uses a rail system for mounting cabinets....See Moreneedsometips08
