the reason they take turns is the zones in the space are poor. the fridge is not large enough and the stove would be better @ 36- 48 inches . Has there been a discussion amongst the 9 -14 people of what they would like to improve. does a person come in with their ingredients and cook and finish and leave...then on to the next person"s turn...or what exactly? If the people have a relationship with one another maybe cooking in a few groups could help ..but even a group of 3 or so would need better zones. Provide more details about what this "arrangement " is really about. I hate the plastic totes in the kitchen...stuff like that is in my basement only.

Dan 1888 has good suggestions. Everything depends on how you intend to use the space. Is the current sitting height comfortable? Are the built ins actually storage with lift tops? Would you prefer that space as a dining spot with movable chairs and a normal height table? Does a cosy area with a small round table and two cushy chairs appeal? How would you utilise the electric outlets? So much depends on your personal preference. Consider all factors before spending time and money on alterations or demo. Please show us how you have updated this already pleasant space.

yes, you'd have to get a 120-200 grit paper, sand off all of the glossy finish. dust off all residue. Then go over it once more w/a fine (350 sandpaper) grit paper, wipe w/mineral spirits. with all this dust and finishes, you may want to remove the door and do this in a garage. when it's all prepped, use an oil based primer (if you plan on painting the wood a darker color, have the primer tinted to your paint color (or one shade lighter). I like Zinsser. spend more and get the spray can. this will need to be used outside unless you want to completely tape off and plastic everything else in your room. When the primer has dried, take a very find sand paper and lightly go over the primer to knock down any heavier spots or brush marks. remove all dust with a dry brush or vacuum, and wipe w/damp rag. Now you can paint. Make sure to use a paint for wood trim, not drywall. I like BM Advance for wood. any other type of hybrid paint (looks like an oil finish but cleans up w/water) is good.

I guess the windows can’t be painted? The strong contrast between the bright white windows and the existing brown trim is very distracting. Particularly so in the existing mauve siding sample because the mauve makes the brown trim jump out. If the brown window trim could blend with the siding color, it would look more cohesive. A strong color like the deep green or navy might be good. Or even (I can’t believe I’m saying this because it’s so overdone) deep charcoal.
