carpet runner for island stools

The stools at my kitchen island (where my kids snack, do homework, etc) were starting to scratch up the floors (hardwood) even w/ those felt pads on the chair legs. So I looked around for a rug the right size, sort of like a runner that I could put under the chairs, but I wasn't able to find the right size, so I ended up using FLOR tiles. It works fine, but I don't love the look. I'd much rather have a more interesting/patterned rug, even though there is a patterned rug just a few feet away (if I could have gotten the matching runner to the rug, I would have, but they didn't have one). The island is 8' long so the runner would have to be about that length. I think it would need to be 3' wide (not 2'6" as many runners are) to be wide enough to keep the stools on the rug when pulled out. Any suggestions? If you have a rug under the stools at your island, what type of rug do you have? Here are pics of the rug we have just a few feet away, and the island itself. (Excuse the mess in the kitchen and on the shelves; this pic was taken right after construction was completed last year.)
