Has anyone bought a camera online?

If you have which site have you used? I have started looking from addresses in the photo mags I get but I get overwhelmed when going over all the info. I want to buy a Nikon D80 Kit and have seen several sites but am unsure since I am spending so much money...

Any tips, links, suggestions would be great!

I bought my camera online, Beach Camera. Wouldn't hesitate to do it again. Saved more than $150. First I visited one of the online camera review sites that list vendors and vendor ratings. They had a 800 number so I called and placed my order. Quick service, everything as advertised. Local stores in my area never have what I want. They can special order but it costs a lot. I trust my MasterCard company to intervene if something goes wrong.

Bought a lens from amazon.com last month.

I would never buy something that expensive from ebay. Just MHO.

cametacamera.com does LOTS of business and has good reviews. I bought my camera bag from them adn one of my cameras. They run their business form an ebay storefront.

My advice - NOOOO! Sure, maybe statistically most people have no problems. But what if you're that one person who does? The cost of shipping anything back is astronomical - that's assuming you're dealing w/ someone reputable with a reasonable return policy who would take it back or isn't a crook who plays games with you trying to run out the clock & give you the runaround until the 60 day time limit for filing a chargeback on your VISA has expired. Whatever you do, don't buy anything from C o m pa ct App liances dot com. That was without a doubt the most bizarre buying experience of my entire life. Me, I'm to the point where I won't even buy large items locally unless I know it has a decent return policy - a 60 day return period and they take back defective merchandise - that leaves Sears, Home Depot and Menards and that's about it. OK> So, I'm reading this post due to a recent experience with the plumber my GC is using for our renovation. I got a babysitter to watch my toddler so I could go look at fixtures at their showroom with my baby. So, I get there and they don't have many of the nicer brands on display- they want to show me everything in a catalog!! Well, thank you but I can do that at home. So, fine- I briefly look at the catalog and pick a few things to get prices. They gave me some pricing and I left. So- wouldn't you want to see products in person if you plan to invest nearly $2000 on them?? I dragged my two small children to another local plumbing outfit to see the higher end stuff I got quoted for at the previous place. The prices were more than $500 different!!! I mean to do I have stupid written on my head b/c I have a newborn? Do they just think I don't have time to research and will just take their price?? This mother has an MBA thank you very much. Fine. So I talked to my contractor and he said to approach them on the issue. I did. They claim their product is better quality and that you can get the same things from other dealers but they aren't as heavy... blah blah blah. That may be true for some Kohler fixtures, but not Rohl!!! And I don't even believe them at that. For the amount of money saved I can buy a whole new fixture in a few years if I decide to change it or it goes bad!! Can someone please tell me if these people are just jerking around with me?? I thought about how they may try to pad the rest of the bill if they adjust the fixture prices, so I'm not really sure what to do with this mess. This is why I do NOT trust vendors like this- b/c of dishonest people who try to make excuses for their ridiculous prices.

We bought a sofa on Chairish with almost great success. I corresponded with the buyer who was very nice and mailed a fabric swatch so we'd have it, which has been helpful. It did take the shipper a good while to pick up the sofa in NY and then ship it to the west coast, and it appeared to be wrapped well. I pulled back the plastic to look at the upholstery before signing off on the "ok," and it looked fine, but I didn't look at the casters on the front legs, and they'd gotten bent in shipping (the seller said she'd told them to be careful). I was very worried that the legs themselves were damaged and that we'd have trouble finding new casters that fit, but the manufacturer (George Smith) mailed new ones free of charge, our remodeling contractor's carpenter got the bent one off and extracted the snapped off stump of the other one easily, put on the new ones, and it's been great ever since. I hadn't considered the question of loss between the time you pay and the time it's in the shipper's hands, and, also, shippers are notoriously free of responsibility for damage (absent a specific agreement, I think they pay a ridiculous per-pound amount). I guess it all comes down to one's risk tolerance level.

Annie, Since you want a bigger rose to knock a few years off of waiting until your ZD matures, may I recommend getting it either from Reagan Roses as an own root/bare root rose in spring of 2019. Or, get it bare root grafted on multiflora root stock from Palatine Roses (Canada), also next spring. Both sources should supply the largest size generally available commercially, of all bare root or pot grown sources I know of. Antique Rose Emporium sells 2 gallon size roses, but all own root, and truly IMHO, are not really much bigger or older than one gallon own root stock sold elsewhere. I think grafted on multiflora will be a good root stock for you in PA, and produce larger size at maturity over an own root, bare root ZD from Reagan Roses. However, being own root as Reagan provides, means no possibility of a root stock taking dominance over the scion, ZD, since it is growing on its own root. Check both nurseries for the size of the roses you will get, grade #1 is the largest size generally available. Reseller Ratings is a great resource.

I've bought cameras happily from Amazon (multiple times), B&H (bhphotovideo.com), and Newegg.

I have had great luck with Newegg.com I have purchase a couple camera through them, and recommened them to others with good results.

It does pay to shop around though.

Often NewEgg throws in a 1GB card with the camrea. Great deal.

I went to Pricegrabber.com.

They compare all products and you can narrow down your research by selecting what particular things you want on your camera.

They have reviews on their products by consumers, and also reviews on the stores where the products were purchased.

You can view products sellers from lowest to highest price.

I bought my Nikon Coolpix5700 after researching it on their site, and finding the cheapest online price.

2nd for Beach Camera. These guys have been around a looong time, way before the age of digicams. Price and services are good. I've purchased camera accessories from them too.

Thank you for all the different links, suggestions and feedback. I don't remember if I mentioned I have been looking through Popular Photography mag's and found the first links there. I have a canon PowerShot A85 that has worked great for a long time. Last time [maybe a year ago] I came here and got lots of help someone - Maybe Joe- gave me links and info on more things I could do with that camera. So I have had lots of fun and improved a bunch on photo 'how to's' but it slipped out of my hand a while back and I broke the little silver ring covering the lens area where it zooms - I think it probably also protects the lens a bit along with just looking better! LOL Anyway since then I have been looking more seriously. I have have just gotten a new job and will will be able to afford a nice camera so thought I would take the plunge and get the 'Dream' Camera. I want to get as many perks to it on the first purchase as I can afford because I will also be using this for business so can deduct it. Thank goodness for that although even with being able to deduct it I stillneed to be able to pay for it!

I also use NewEgg.com and B&H. And I ALWAYS check out any online sites at Reseller Ratings, as Joe suggested.

Sydney, tell us what your dream camera is. Or maybe you haven't decided yet. I really like to hear about the cameras others have chosen. I had my 'dream camera' picked out and was ready to order, then something someone said changed my mind. Then I researched another one, same thing. So, I'm still looking, comparing, deciding.

Realistacally; niko D80 and I am hoping thed new Olympus is everthing the company has promised. I have the $$, just waiting. If it is not, then I will get the D80

Mine is the Nikon D80. I have read lots and lots of good things about it...I need to understand more about the different types of lens. I've read what all it good but need/want to know why or the difference/advantage between lens that area step up from one another. I just keep reading and reading then come here and ask questions.

LOL Joe. I don't think the total price of all my cars have cost that much !..

The Nikon D80 is my dream camera also, please keep us updated on it. I have been asked to take wedding photos next June and I hope to have that camera for it by then. My sister has this very camera and she has taken 3 weddings with very good professional looking photos(she is self-taught just like me). She also took a homecoming coronation with great results. Let us know, as I would like to get this camera also but am worried too about buying online with that kind of money.

Another vote for bhphotovideo.com I've purchased from them several times and their prices and service is great. So is newegg.com

Hi all,

Well, as long as it's just a dream, mine would be the Nikon D3. But I could "settle" for a Nikon D300. OK, that's just a dream too. Realistically, my entry level (I still don't have a digital camera) choice will probably be a Nikon D40X with a AF-S DX Zoom-NIKKOR 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6G IF-ED lens.
