Have you seen the April 2008 Traditional Home magazine?

I received my new subscription copy the other day. I am interested in what you all think of the Cover picture/room? Particulary the drapes. I had selected a fabric for my great room that is a very similar to that stripe (but different colors). I had discounted using it for my drapes because the stripes would need to be horizontal and that tends to be a more modern/contemporary look and my style is more of a casual traditional. I do find myself leaning a little more transitional these days. Anyway, I was still considering the fabric and how it could be used and then I received this issue...I was so excited to see those panels (nice to see a picture of how something would look). The room is traditional, but I think the panels look good in the room. Anyone with thoughts? Please be honest as this is a big investment for me. Is it trendy? The people making my drapes said they would be concerned about the horizontal lines not matching up or them hanging/sagging differently over time. I hope some of you have seen it. It's not on the website yet so I can't post the picture.

That issue will be in the grocery store, Target, etc., so I will just be sure to take a look at it while I'm at the checkstand this week.

Sue, Thanks for sharing your photos. Very nice except the bugs. If that was the only choice to eat on a menu I might well lose all the weight that I need to. LOL!!! The tree is fascinating as it looks to have leaves on the top and flowers coming out the trunk. That lotus vendor makes it look like it is a piece of cake to walk with that bowl on her head. Amazing! Just before EBay quit allowing magazine subscription sales, I got a screaming deal on Traditional Home; $10 for a 3 year subscription(!). I like it but definitely agree it is nowhere near the 'traditional' style it used to be. My MIL was a subscriber for many years, and kept her back issues. Comparing what TH used to feature 5-10-20 years ago to today's style it is clearly night/day. I agree it is more a fusion-eclectic look. I always enjoy reading it. Ann

I like these pendants but not for this kitchen. If there were other industrial touch points I might like them more in this space, but the kitchen is traditional to me in every regard. This makes the pendants look out of place and awkward, IMO. I like this instead:

I love the drapes. I could see them in both a traditional and transitional setting, still maybe a bit trendy. The people making them have a valid concern. They have to be perfectly made and perfectly hung so that the pattern matches. I didn't realize that they may sag over time. I'm not sure that I would chance that for more than one window. They would look awful if they weren't perfect. A horizontal stripe can 'play on the eyes'. I am not sure that I would like them over a long period of time. Since they will be expensive and a bit trendy, the pattern may be an expensive risk. I can do custom drapery, but I would not make a small horizontal stripe. No room for error.

Thanks for posting the picture. I tried looking for the magazine at our supermarket and they didnt have it. I think a good seemstress should have no problem lining up the pattern lines. I did a plaid type pattern in our other house and it was never an issue. I know many people with an obvious pattern and no one ever mentioned it was a concern. They are beautiful drapes, go for it, you might need to find another person to make them.

I really like them but don't know if they are trendy or not. I keep wondering if they would funny when they are closed. Too horizontal? If you don't have them closed much then it would be a big dea1.

Thank you for responding gk, red, blondiel, and kitchenkelly. gk, thanks for posting your picture. So many people have plaid panels these days and it seems it would be the same situation as this. One complication that I failed to mention is that I need a width and a half on each side of the window, so that makes it a tad more difficult.

blondiel, I do need to figure out if I will get tired of these too quickly - that would not be good!

kelly, thanks for brining up the thought about closing them. I plan to leave the panels open, but if I did want to close them, I don't think I would like the look.

Polkadots, I hadn't responded since I'm waffling, but thought I'd throw out my .02 for you anyway. I'm not sure I like those drapes on the cover of TH. Not necessarily because of the horizontal stripes, but just the fabric itself isn't my cup of tea. I love Gk5040's plaid, so I'm sure it depends on the type/color/sheen of the fabric (and I do remember seeing yours, but I can't remember it specifically).

I guess my gut feeling would be that if it's going to be very expensive (and I'm sure it will be), and you're not really sure about it, I'd go the safe route. It just seems like it would be too risky in case you didn't like the look when they were finished, or in case you tired of them too soon. But then again, "No guts, no glory"!

Guess I'm not much help on this, but at least it's now bumped up & maybe others that can help more will stop in!

A panel and a half might add another degree of difficulty. The picture almosts looks as if it is a plaid too. I dont think those drapes looks trendy. Its all how you put it together. The inspiration room looks great! You could play it safe and go for a solid, but the nice thing about the multicolored stripe is 5 years down the road you can change the wall color and give the room a new look. The stripe adds a more masculine look to the room versus a floral.

hoosiergirl and gk, thanks for the feedback. I am waffling too, hoosiergirl! Between this and my other post (sorry to have two) I am getting mixed feelings. Need to think some more...thanks for your input.
