That looks terrible.

I would rather but the great wall design stickers offered by the retailers who pay to advertise here. They have some really great art designs and are way cheaper too! Theirs don't pick up dirt and peel off the walls in a few weeks looking ratty either like those cheap Chinese knock-offs you offer.

Brutuses, I like your counter and agree with your reason for choosing it. I still have the Formica "butcher block" counters that my kitchen has had since 1978. They are in very good condition and blend well with my kitchen. They certainly aren't up-to-date, and eventually we will change them out....but not until there is truly a need. And, the photos below show just where my practical (stubbornly so? ;) streak began. This is the house where I grew up, and my father still lives there. These photos were taken just a few Christmases ago. Yes, those are the *original* coppertone appliances, Formica counters, and a faux brick backsplash in their kitchen. In that second photo of their living room, the wool carpet and drapes are also original to the house (1965), and still look nice and timeless. Can you tell that they loved and were influenced by their visits to Williamsburg? :) My parents have always taken good care of their things (that carpet is spotless), and remembered the lessons from the Great Depression. They didn't see a need to replace something until it was required (and neither did most of their friends)...my mother said that those coppertone appliances would outlive her, and sadly they have. They didn't criticize if others liked to keep up with the "latest and greatest", they just didn't feel that need themselves. She and my father enjoyed their "antiquing" trips and found lots of goodies (almost always at a bargain price) on their jaunts, went out a lot with family and friends, and my mother enjoyed hosting events for her various ladies' clubs, so they did have some fun with a little of their money. They just didn't replace things just to replace them. That house may be full of older (working) appliances and some out-of-date finishes, but somehow it still "works". It is a warm home full of laughter and fun, and everyone always feels welcome there. I hope that my kids will remember my home the same way, regardless of the finish. :)

Never tried a Roomba. Does it hold a lot? Would it pull dirt out of a rug? I think of these as useful for crumbs, other loose debris, but don't know. No, it doesn't have a big reservoir -- expect to empty the "pan" every time it runs. Yes, it pulls dirt out of a rug; it is a good vacuum. Pretty much every time I run it, the pan is full of dust and dog hair. Because my daughters and I both have long hair, the Roomba beaters do need "cleaning" about once a month -- I suspect that in a house of short-haired girls or all guys, this wouldn't be an issue. I sit down on the floor, remove the beaters, and use scissors to snip off the hair; it takes about 10 mintues a month. What I like about it, of course, is that it requires NO effort on my part: We "live" in our family room, so I run it 3-4 times a week in there. I close off the door to the hall, close off the door to the office, move the trash can and a bar stool to prevent it from running into the kitchen, then push a button. When it's done, it returns to its charging station. I must disagree that hardwoods are easier to care for. I know it's not the current trend, but I do think 60s housewives were on to something when they covered up all their hardwood floors with wall-to-wall carpet. I prefer taking care of carpet too. I don't think 60s housewives chose carpeting IN SPITE OF the extra cleaning it requires. They chose wall-to-wall carpeting because it was a new trend, because it is warmer, and more friendly to sit upon. You haven't said whether or not you have children, but two people could be quite comfortable in less than 1700 sq ft. The smaller the house, the less to clean, it costs less to build, less taxes, less for utilities; the HVAC system will cost less because it is smaller, etc. As scone911 said, you could save enough to pay someone to do the cleaning. The goal isn't to have a small house; rather, the goal is to have a right-sized house. You need adequate storage and space in the right spaces ... but not wasted space that'll just be -- as you say -- more to clean, more to build, more to tax, more to heat and cool. The house in which I live now is a study in where not to place space. We have a giant master bedroom -- but the empty space at the foot of the bed isn't particularly valuable. At the same time, our master bedroom closet is cramped. Likewise, we have a giant kitchen, which means that replacing the counter tops was very expensive, but our combination walk-in pantry /laundry room is too narrow for comfort. I wish I could move some of the space around!

Thanks. Its funny because since I had mine with a small bevel like I mentioned before, and my painters had caulking in the corners to make them smooth, I guess I accidentally ended up with easy to clean ones because of these minor edits. I also think it has something to do with the prep work, at least for job built ones, I have been in some flip houses where they did those cabinets and I think the finish is fairly rough and the paint on them is fairly thin which would drive future issues like you are highlighting. Thinking about the initial thought of the style differences, regardless of whether both are kitchens or not, there are some basic style things I am thinking about on which is longer lasting. Most notable, White walls and baseboards vs. light walls with dark baseboards. Light floors vs. dark floors. ORB vs. Chrome. I like both, but have a personal preference of the two, but I don't know that it will ever be the most popular. The last thing I am thinking is that if I were to go with the white on white I would probably do different ceiling details than if I do the one with light walls and dark baseboards. (one more square ceilings than the other one). What I am learning here is to make things easy to change be the trendy part. Maybe pay a little more for the floors if they ever need to be refinished you can do that instead of getting floors so thin they can't be refinished etc. Anyway - thoughts not the style differences I noted?

Despite the title of this thread, I think it is becoming increasingly difficult to tell one decade from another, in terms of design. In the 20th Century, it was fairly easy to identify styles from one decade to another, up through the 1980s, but ever since the 1990s, things have become a bit more blurred, for one reason or another. Younger people generally dictate design trends because the care about them more, but lately they have not been dictating much that is uniquely recognizable. Minimalism is somewhat popular now, but it was also popular in the 1950s when I think it reached its pinnacle in design terms, although it started in the 1920s or 1930s. I am reminded also of the Italian Futurists of the 1910s - we do not have movements like that any more. For me, decades have lost identities - they don't even have names any more since the 1990s. What do you call the first decade of the 21st Century, and what do you call the second decade? Do they even deserve names? How can things be dated if the dates don't have an identity, much less a name? Around 1900 people called their period the "turn of the century", but does anyone say "turn of the millenium" about the period around 2000? It is also the turn of a century, making the previous term ambiguous, but I don't hear it being called anything. I hear about generational names, but those do not apply to design styles, as generations last longer than design styles.

Vote and opinions needed!

Guys, I bought this really cool Spam vinyl wall covering and installed it in every room in my house. (See below.) Now I am wondering if I should do the ceiling in Spam too? Doing the ceiling also, would certainly make the whole place feel cozy, right? And everyone know the hot trend now is Blue/Yellow/Orange. But I am feeling sick and dizzy just looking at the Decolistic Spam walls already. I need an answer today because the installers are on their way now to finish with the ceiling with more vinyl Spam and repair what is peeling off already from the walls after two weeks of high humidity we had here on Bongo Bongo Island. Help!

PS. Does anybody have a tip on how to get rid of the mildew that grows under Decolistic Spam vinyl wallcoverings. I need and answer fast because the mildew is seeping from under the vinyl wall art and dripping onto the carpeting.

Well good....now I know what to do in my powder room. The paint is Dark (Spam Can) Blue. Nevermind the stencils....I am going to use Spam decals. And I already ordered the rug!

I can't possibly remove the thomas train stickers from the wall in our front parlor, but the smoking parlor....gad that spam in pink....I MUST HAVE IT!!!! Can I get a nice victorian frame on it so it will pass the historic design committee????

My neighbors painted their house this horrible blue. Not Navy. Not Royal Blue. I just did not know what to call it. Cobalt did not fit either. Spam Can Blue. Perfect. I love it. Thanks amysrq!

Decolist Vinyl Wallcovering Warning!

I cashed in my entire 401K to invest in Decolistic Vinyl to make our house a home. Sure, at first it looked yummy with all those pictures of leafless trees, wacky sunflowers, giraffes wearing sunglasses and antique trains on every wall, but thinking ahead to resale we decided to rip them down on the advice of our Realtor and every single person we spoke to.

Easy? Ha! We tried wallpaper stripper, fabric softener, soy based paint stripper, pool cleaner. Nada. We tried sanding with a cheese grater. Steaming with a floor mop. A chisel. Lenten prayer. A flamethrower. Well, the flamethrower finally worked.

Now we will have to repaint. Any color suggestions?
