Ruh roh. That doesn't look too good. I had a birch tree that looked exactly like that. Eventually the "sick" trunk split and fell over. The rest of the tree had to be removed. Maybe you will be luckier. I'm not an espert in these matters. Good luck.

first... consider dax a professional .. what he gets away with... is not what the novice will get away with .... regarding timing... re september ... it can be 100 F degrees ... or it can be 70 degrees .... if you are reasonable sure ... that after transplant .... you wont have a week of 100 degree days... go for it .... but again.. its back to experience level .... but if you do a deciduous tree in sept... dont have a stroke.. if all the leaves fall off a month early .. no matter how good you are.. there are stressors ... in z5 or 6 .... where the ground freezes ... fall transplant.. gives you two cool season growth periods to grow roots ... before the heat of next summer .... and there is no way that is bad .... if you wait until next may ... a couple days after transplant.. it could hit 100 again ... and last the rest of the season .. and that is trouble ... its all a matter of knowing the variables .... and your experience level.. and choosing the timing that is idiot proof.. and sometimes that doesnt even help ... lol define black cherry .... fruit or furniture wood tree .... i move cherries all the time .... below is a picture of what a bare rooted tree looks like ... i would do it.. as soon as the leaves fall off ... dig new hole first.. then tree.. then replant.. asap .. good luck ken

Any hosta with yellow or green foliage would look great. Any of the Sum and Substance family (example - Mountain Snow, Winter Snow, Sum it Up, Sum Cup O Joe, Sum of all) or ones that have fragrant flowers will do just fine in sun. Something like Fragrant Bouquet apparently needs sun for its fragrance. Honeybells is another one that comes to mind. Also Sunpower, Titanic, Fat Cat, Liberty, Majesty, montana Aureomarginata, Leading Lady, Xanadu, Green Piecrust, Stardust, Jimmy Crack Corn, Golden Sunburst, Brother Stephan, and Blaze of Glory are other large to extra large hostas that I grow here that might work. Sugar and Cream I saw growing in a lot of sun when I was in Minneapolis last weekend. I have some hostas in a lot of sun mixed with daylilies, irises, peonies, etc etc. Hostas and daylilies will want more water than bearded irises. But, the beardless irises, like the siberian, don't mind extra water. Brenda

Amester, my yarrow hasn't started blooming yet and I've misplaced the plant identifiers so I'm not sure. It's just been soooo prolific. If it comes out white, I'll know it came from you now. Sounds like Skybird is my columbine donar. I'd love to stop down at your place sometime and see your place and maybe dig up a few starts. With that many bees and butterflies buzzing/fluttering around your place must be surrounded in flowers! That's good to know that the bees love catmint. The patio area I was going to have them, others suggested I use the May Night salvia. I might just try catmint in a more obscure place. I read that butterflies like the salvia, what is your experience? I also read that it likes moist soils (which was why I initially wanted the catmint being more drought tolerant). Again what is your experience? I used to have valerian and loved it but I don't remember having very many butterflies. I wonder why I didn't have that many because I've read that I should have. I took a walk around my neighborhood and noticed most/all of the iris had already bloomed and mine haven't even started. They look extremely healthy so I'm keeping my fingers crossed. I'll give them till next spring.
