Konrad, wonderful photos. It's a lovely city. That first photo of the garden is my favorite. So much color and texture. The hotel with ivy is great and the apt with window boxes is nice too. Thanks for posting those.

Per sq. ft. costs depend greatly on the ingenuity and bargaining ability of the builder and the building contract. The fewer hands between the buyer and the actual working crew and suppliers the lower the cost. For instance, as an experienced owner builder since the 1980s, I've strived with middling success to reduce the greedy middle hands. Not all by any means!! You cannot overestimate the cupidity and incompetence of many of the trades and suppliers--from architects on down.

I guess I should have added that it wouldn't overwinter for you anyway, windberry, sorry. Not reliably hardy below zone 8.....and even that seems questionable. But it makes a fearsome flowering and hummingbird attracting summer annual, if on the pricey side.

A history is of both types being considered examples of Cynara cardunculus. With there in fact having been non-artichoke named forms such as Cristopher Lloyd's Giant and 'Florist Cardy'. Both of which have been offered by Oregon vendors in the past. And the artichoke cultivars having been differentiated by being placed within the aforementioned Scolymus Group. As in C. cardunculus Scolymus Group 'Green Globe'. The way the kind shown and asked about here has the same leaf size from top to bottom is not like cardoon plants I usually see. So it may in fact be a specific named form - perhaps even a different species in the same genus, if any of those have the same general appearance at all. For instance C. baetica ssp. maroccana - I have no idea what this looks like but it has been offered by an Oregon retailer in the past.

Butchart’s is certainly worth the visit, especially in spring when the rhododendrons are in bloom. It’s been many years (more than 25!) since we were last there but I’m sure it is still good. Are you familiar with Roger’s Chocolates? We discovered them on our first visit out there 30+ years ago. While the chocolates are available in certain stores here - and other places - they have become my standard mail-order Christmas gift for certain family members :-) who react very negatively to suggestions that alternate gifts (even garden ones!) would be suitable. So, if you haven’t tried Victoria Creams or Empress Squares, check them out when you visit out there!

wow! gorgeous city and photos...the english garden is my favorite, just beautiful...love the sunset and greenglass bldg, also the penthouse with the tree too, suppose it overlooks the water *sigh*

I took a similar picture of a building in Vancouver years ago with trees growing on the roof. Is that on English Bay, I think that's what it's called....where they shoot of the fireworks for the International Fireworks festival?

Beautiful pictures. My sister lives right in Vancouver, I'm very jealous. My parents and another sister are an hour east of there but are in the city often.

One day I took a walk to Stanley Park and took my tele lens with me, in the hopes for some birds to shoot but I was very disappointed, only a couple of American Robbins I spotted under a black berry bush.
