Oh my, the recall list gets worse all the time. What can people feed their pets that isn't harmful, or deadly?

I'm wondering where they got this melamine contaminated rice protein from. On their home page they say most pet foods are imported and that theirs is made in the USA, well it'll be interesting to see where it came from. My bets on China as the source of that rice protein.

I wonder why this thread wasn't showing when I looked before posting mine. I tried to post about this last night, but I could not get the post to upload. I am glad you got it posted earlier today, Meghane. This is getting to be very scary.

I just check on the Nutro website as well and they have notice on "rice gluten" saying that while it is an ingredient in their products they did not purchase it from the same company as Natural Choice, that company was Wilbur-Ellis, a huge agri trading company. Hmmm, now I'm a little worried. Just because they didn't buy there's from Wilbur-Ellis doesn't mean that the supplier they bought theirs from didn't also get some of the same tainted product. I don't know what else to feed my one old Border Collie in the meantime, he has very bad digestive problems and any change even a slow changeover gives him near uncontrollable diahrea. Nutro Lamb & Rice is the only food I've found that he can eat and be regular and I've tried different brands of L & R plus other things.

What ticks me off is it's a well known fact, if I know it then people in the agri-biz have to know it. That China has so badly polluted nearly all of its agricultural land that the only way they can get any food to grow in order to feed their people is by using such heavy concentrations of fertilizers including melamine apparently. Concentrations so huge that most food grown in China would be deemed unsafe for human consumption by the FDA, Health Canada etc. for sale here.

I think I'm going back to homemade. It is a bit more expensive especially with 4 large dogs, but even without the possibility of killing my kids, I do think it's healthier to feed fresh foods rather than processed.

I just read today that the melanine may have been PURPOSELY added into the food to increase the protein measurement. PURPOSELY. It's bad enough things like hooves, hair, and beaks which are completely undigestible are added to some foods to boost protein levels, but now they're adding poisons for the same reason.

And now Royal Canin as well. Some of their dry foods containing rice protein have been added to the list. The particular food we feed is not on the list, but I am very very nervous.

I just called the Nutro 800 # and asked them if their rice gluten came from China and while they wouldn't say where it came from he did say that it did not come from China. Maybe some others of you can phone and see what you get. Your call will first be answered by a call center fielding calls for Nutro but ask to be put thru to "corporate" as the people at the call center do not work for Nutro and don't know much.

pkguy, I have an old gal (12) who has the same problem. You could temporarily go with the Eukanuba Prescription Low Residue from your vet. Of course, speak with him/her first, but that's what I feed old gal when she has a GI flare up. She was eating the Nutro Sensitive Stomach but I am now switching her to VeRus.

In any event, when her GI problems were very acute, my vet told me that if need be, I could have kept her on the Low Res RX food for the rest of her days, however long/short they may be.

Hope it helps. It is very troublesome, but I think more so for those of us with old dogs with issues.

Actually only ONE product of Natural Balances entire line is being recalled. The Vension line and it turns out Natural Balance had just switched to the rice product in question...All other Ntural Balance food is okay. For those of you looking for a safe product (I still use Natural Balance - I dont buy the Vension) Trader Joes has dog food and cat food not affected by any of this disaster, their food has been voluntarily tested and has passed testing and is back on the shelves as of yesterday.

Well, I think the NB thing was dishonest. They specifically said on their web page the cat food contained no rice, then flew as fast as the could to redo the ingredient lists as the recall was made. A lot of people who pay attention to cat food want ANIMAL protein in the food, not food that is pumped up with rice protein so the company can save money on expensive meat.
