cabinet advice & architect vs. KD

Hi,

I am building a new kitchen and have been doing a lot of reading about cabinets. I think we may be in the stock price category, however, I keep reading that it might make sense to check out small local cabinet makers 1) because with this economy, they may need the work and price competitively, 2) you don't have the shipping costs. Any opinions??

Second. We have an architect who has been great with overall design of addition, general kitchen layout, but we have very different tastes in cabinets, tiling, etc. If I use a KD, will I be paying double in a sense if we are working with architect on standard 15% of construction budget. I know they don't "charge" for so they must make their money selling the "stuff." So I assume I will pay more for the cabinets and tile than if I shopped around and bought myself???

Thanks in advance for any help!
