Ensete murelli Fun? Yes! Little? No...oh no They get big! Magnificent plant tho, it won't make nanners for ya, but still very worth it. There's some wonderful pics in this forum of these very plants They don't sucker or pup, unless forced to, you can cut the corm in half and both will grow, or scoop the central eye. This will make dozens of tiny pups, once the baby's have a few leaves, you can expose the corm and cut the little plants apart, they probably won't have their own roots, get a decent peice of the corm with each. Easy on the sun til the start growing again.

Please do not miss Phipps! It is not what you remember, unless you have been here within a year. Sadly, your visit will be after the Spring Flower show, and before the Butterfly Forest debuts, but there is PLENTY to ooh and aah over. There are docent led tours and free public programs on the weekends. You can enjoy the outdoor garden for free. The National Aviary on the North Side is another suggestion. How about the zoo in Highland Park? Beautifully landscaped, but the real stars are the new baby tigers and elephants. They have also brought back polar bears, which were missing for quite a few years. These are all easily reachable, even on a bus! Remember, our last frost date in mid May, so gardens and nurseries are only going to be beginning to open the weekend you are here. Here is a partial list of nurseries from last season. I don't recall what the first pic was, but you very well may be right. How long have you had the eucomis? I'm surprised it hasn't bloomed, mine didn't bloom the first year in the ground, but did this year, after I had lifted it from the ground in Dubois. It started forming offsets too. I would think if yours is clumping, it should have been flowering by now. Is it in full sun? I'm going to dig a bulb and let it ride this year. I think they should be fine here, at least with a little mulch.

The Goldfinch and several other birds were having a time in the outdoor Japanese Garden area, and weren't going to let a camera bug ruin their fun.

Beautiful place and beautiful glass, too. I love Frabel's work; the figures dancing on the balls in the water are amazing! His trees are wonderful too. I recognize a couple Chihuly pieces; he's one of my favorite artists.

The Phipps Conservatory was one of my favorites when I was growing up in Pittsburgh. It's great to see it again- it's the perfect setting for those amazing glass pieces. Thanks for providing the photos.

Juanita- The Frabol exhibit is at Phipps until Jnauary 2010. Maybe you'll have a chance to see it.
