I saw ixora today at Phipps conservatory and loved it. Can it be rooted easily from cuttings? and can it be a houseplant? I'm looking for one of the dwarf varieties. I'd prefer already rooted, but will consider cuttings if they root easily. I especially like the soft yellow. Don't go by what's listed on my trade page. I don't have most of my plants listed there. If you have some to trade let me know what your interests are I'll send you a list of what I have. Angela

There was a sign about the size of the corm, but I forget how big it was... Maybe 60 lbs.? I remember thinking that it would be hard for me to lift, also that it was bigger than a child, lol! The conservatory got the plant in 2010, but I don't know how old Romero actually is. This is his first bloom. Phipps tends to have a lot of foliage around everything except maybe the bonsai, lol. It is a beautiful place, one of the nicest conservatories I've visited.

I went last week to see the Spring Flower Show... very nice orchids! (I have some great pictures, maybe I should upload to the gallery?) At that time they were giving out Sweet Alyssum. They were all pretty short, about 1-1.5 inches, stout, lots of leaves. I do like the new entrance but you're right, it has no plants. My roommate and I were commenting on all the white in there, and the lack of seeds in the gift shop (right now they have an exhibit on natural remedies, but no seeds to grow your own plants).

The Hamelia patens is a favorite native plant for many here in Florida. It is a fairly fast grower, almost always in bloom, looks great and it is a HUGE attractor for hummingbirds. But... it's not very cold hardy at all. I live in 9A Florida and even though it is a Florida native plant, I would have to take measures in winter to keep it from dying down the roots. At the moment all I have is a cutting that I have managed to get to root. It isn't quite big enough to plant yet and I should be able to bring it in this winter. I imagine in zones where the ground actually freezes, it would die off completely, but I don't know for sure.

The Goldfinch and several other birds were having a time in the outdoor Japanese Garden area, and weren't going to let a camera bug ruin their fun.

Beautiful place and beautiful glass, too. I love Frabel's work; the figures dancing on the balls in the water are amazing! His trees are wonderful too. I recognize a couple Chihuly pieces; he's one of my favorite artists.

The Phipps Conservatory was one of my favorites when I was growing up in Pittsburgh. It's great to see it again- it's the perfect setting for those amazing glass pieces. Thanks for providing the photos.

Juanita- The Frabol exhibit is at Phipps until Jnauary 2010. Maybe you'll have a chance to see it.
