I posted this on "birdwatching forum" also: I've been counting the days and figured we were just at 28 yesterday. Last night she was on the nest at 10pm. I was afraid there would be no chicks as we had a hard freeze before the 4th egg was laid and one night about 5 days ago the eggs were left unattended for I don't know how long. Then this morning--an EMPTY NEST! I'd loved to have seen the babies but I am so happy they're all alive and well----somewhere. Is it likely we'll get a nest next year? I'm sure we're on the second generation of barn swallows (in our garage). Thanks for all your advice and encouragment!

I knew nothing of killdeer last year... this year.. all I see are killdeer nests yet I have yet to see one to its fruitful babies :( we have one in our court right now. she had two eggs.. I left for a week and a half and came back and as of yesterday there was one egg... unfortunately the plot thickens... totally weird to find a "dead" killdeer egg in my yard. it had a dead baby chick in it. I have two cats.. but I can't see them actually grabbing the egg and carrying it over my very tall fence just to drop it in my yard and not actually do anything with the egg?? and then today I left and an hour later came back and the mom was gone. the dad was gone and now the egg is just there. there is a bird rescue I could take the egg to tomorrow if mom and dad don't come back.. but I just cant put all the pieces together... how does the mom and dad disappear within an hour?? I can understand if one jumped ship or got hit or something, wouldn't the mate come around for a little bit?? also the heat here in California has bee awful... between 100-110 everyday for a while, could this have made the mama finally just quit??

Brightonborn, your son is a great photographer. When I have more time I will browse his photos more. Thanks for the link. Jean, for most shots I use a standard issue Canon 70mm-300mm f4-5.6 kit lens. Like the US Fish and Wildlife employee you spoke with said, killdeer are protected by the Migratory Bird Treaty Act. Willfully destorying their nest is a crime. I cannot in good conscious tell you to do anything other than do your best to protect the nest, not only because purposely destroying it is illegal, but also, in my opinion (feel free to disagree) unethical. Flag an area around the nest, wait to do the lawn install in that spot later. It may be inconvenient, but imagine the inconvenience of someone coming and destroying your babies. You’ll be grateful you did when you see how cute killdeer chicks are anyways. Of course you’ll have to watch the crew carefully, IME labor crews generally couldn’t care less about something like a nest. It may be that the disturbance of having a lawn installed around them causes the parents to abandon the nest anyways but at least you tried and you can feel good about that!

Great photos! Now I must ask..."How in the world were you able to 'even' get close with a camera/lens?"...Back in '81 (a long time ago, lol) we were watching them trying to figure out where they had their nest so we could take a peek at their eggs. They did their distracting thing to 'mislead you away'...It was very intriguing and challenging...It was in an opening of sand dunes(in Florence,Oregon) which where we were, trees had been removed (to get to sand dunes)I think they were going to put in an RV Park eventually, and there were cabins there at the time, with which we lived in...I guess I just had to say that cos we were just beginning our family and couldn't forget the fondness and remembrance of a very nice place and beginning of a very rewarding life...We did finally find a nest on the ground but well after they had gone..just off the trail we'd go on...They did a good job keeping us distracted, lol....

I love those pictures. What does their call sound like, I wonder. There used to be a site where you can find the sounds of different birds. I'll go take a look. I saw some Kildeer at a shopping area north of here early in the summer- first I've seen in a number of years.

Like your pictures. There are some at the top of the street where I live but never see them here.

Juanita, used the zoom and I also cropped the second one. DH was mowing lawn, and she kept trying to distract him. He kept mowing, finally she just sat down in front of him. He looked, the nest was there, in the grass, so he put a stake there. He mowed around it until after they were hatched and moved. I get such a kick out of them!
