Kitchen Pass Through over Stove - HELP!
Comments (10)I think the above posters have done a very thorough job of explaining why this isn't recommended. Therefore, I'm not going to go there. I will answer the OP's question in my best opinion. What I would do is put the wall behind the cooktop the height you need it-Hidingthe cooktop. Then I would put my granite shelf at bar height. You will have some wall above the shelf on the bar side, but that will prevent things com inadvertently slipping onto the stove. I wouldn't design it is a pass through, more a bar/window....See MoreKitchen pass through with counter or bar height breakfast bar?
Comments (3)I'm thinking you should post the question over at the kitchens forum, if you haven't already. I'm sure you'll get lots of opinions and pics! If you don't need to hide anything you'd rather not be looking at from your family room, I'd go with counter height. It will make the counter seem much more spacious than what you would get with a smaller, bar-height "shelf". Have you done an image search for kitchen pass-thru?...See MorePlease review my first pass on kitchen-breakfast-family room design
Comments (62)What shows you are going about this all wrong is you're honing in on the details (like where to put the dishwasher and fridge), yet you don't even have the big picture yet. I'm an artist. When I start to draw, I don't start with the eyes on the face. I first get the general placement of the figure, then rough in the lights and darks and the general overall feel. I then slowly start to refine everything and the more I refine, the more detailed I can get until finally I can start to detail the eyes, nose and mouth. A good architect will work the same way, only they'll consider the interior, the exterior and how the house sits on the land all at the same time. Not until they and their client have honed in on the overall look and feel, will they start to refine to first room sizes, then things like closets, then get into the details....See MoreHELP! Putting a pass-through in a load bearing wall
Comments (18)With no living space above the only thing the wall can be "bearing" is the weight of the ceiling. Surely you've determined that the ceiling joists run perpendicular to the wall, right? If they run parallel it is not bearing in any way and can be completely removed if you like. If the ceiling joists run perpendicular then it's best if you get into the attic but there are some clues as to whether or not it holds up the ceiling. If the ceiling joists lap over the wall (they meet in pairs) it is certainly bearing. If not it all depends on the span and the size of joists. In general though nearly every such wall without joists lapping over it can be considered a partition wall. If it is a bearing wall one of the best ways to deal with it when only attic space and you're only bearing ceiling weight is by using an "overhead" header (it sits on top of the ceiling joists) to which you attach the ceiling joists with joist hangers. This allows you to completely remove the wall below. Of course you must have proper support at both ends of the "overhead" header....See Moremarcolo
