Wow Eric that is cool! Do you know by chance what kind of flower that is?..
Part of what I am trying to learn -aside from EVERYTHING!lol- is the language...Is the cannon a newer model?
    Thanks!

    sydneydavis,

The flower is a Leek flower. My leeks have bolted (gone to seed). My camera is about a year old. It only has a 3X zoom lense. 12X digital zoom. My next camera will have better zoom capability.

    Wild carrot

    Same settings

I took these with a Canon A85 on the portrait setting. Although they look like I was close, in order to blur the background I took them from several feet away and set the camera at 11x. It's the same orchid, just taken from 2 differnt angles to vary the background.

Tried Manual settings exclusively yesterday, I haven't touched on that til then...Had it since Dec 2005...
    Settings: 1st TN 60S F5
    2nd TN 40S F5
    Regular 30S F5
    REgular 25S F5
    Last TN 20S F5
Taken in shade, on the ground
    No flash
Exif says 4.7mm away from obect, I'm not sure how much that is, but in inch talk about 2 1/2 to 3 1/2 inches away
Used elbow to help steady camera
Set on Manual Mode with macros on
    Camera:FujiFinePix E500 4.1 megapix, 3.2x optical zoom

I think I like the 30s or 25s F5 setting best...I've concluded you must not be in a hurry when use manual settings but I think they would make great focused pictures to print...I've also noticed when I edited any of the higher (lower), don't have the language down yet, kind of reminds of tring to understand algebra, exposures that you could edited them easy enough with gamma, brightness and contrast which looks half way decent...

I did no editing whatsoever on any of them...

I really like these pictures and thank you all so much. Funny I thought that first 'rose' picture was a real rose until I scrolled down.
Eric what is the red spot on the top of the leek?
Solstice That is the camera I have. I am going to try an image like that...
    Thanks again

    sydneydavis,

Found this on another web site,

    Queen Anne's lace
Wild carrot is introduced and naturalised in North America, where it is often known as "Queen Anne's lace". It is so called because the flower resembles lace; the red flower in the center represents a blood droplet where Queen Anne pricked herself with a needle when she was making the lace. The function of the tiny red flower, coloured by anthocyanin, is to attract insects.
