The pics are getting bigger and bigger.......

I've noticed--not just here, but on other forums as well--that the images people are posting seem to be getting larger all the time. It used to be we were cautioned against posting anything over a certain size. (I think it was 640 x 480.) I guess that rule doesn't apply anymore.

All of this is not a problem for me, as I have a high-speed broadband connection. But I wonder if some other members might be having trouble loading these uber-images, to the point where they give up trying to look.

This is a relatively quiet forum, but I thought I'd mention it here as the subject is Photography, after all.

Any thoughts?

I have posted bigger pics, but more compressed. It does suck when a person is on dial-up, everything is so slow to open.

I agree, I remember how frustrating dial up could be.

I went with Photobucket's 640 X 480 and felt a little guilty. Let me know if they should be smaller from now on and I'll be happy to comply.

Thanks HH. I'm having to roam further and further for rock and dig out them out so I can't go much further with the material at hand. The hosta and other plantings look sparse, they are big choices but even though I have trimmed branches and thinned out the trees, it is still very shady which means slower growth. I think an arched Japanese / Chinese / Asian bridge down to the lower level would look nice, fit in and offer a viewing platform for when the area matures. It would be a project, but not as big as all those rocks. Maybe Asian style with a curved starting portion and then transitioning to steps down. You know, Asian style posts, caps, ballisters. It would have to go over the ravine to be authentic looking. Definitely a pain in the butt project, but not too many people have something like it. Jon san

We stole a few square feet from our master...well heck quite a few really in two projects. We had a 650 ish sq ft space that had a tiny bathroom (one vanity, toilet, tiny shower and a closet). The tub was actually IN the master bedroom. So we took the tub out, and expanded the bathroom by ohhh let's see, about 3' on one side, and five on the other and expanded that closet out another 3' so we could have a tub, walk in shower, two vanities and a laundry (stackable) on that floor. We then closed off 12' of the room giving us a walk in closet that is about 12' x 15'. Do I regret it? I haven't got to live in the suite with the new bathroom yet (tiling starts on Monday) but the loss of sq ft is no biggie. With the closet (full of buildins and a desk area) we lost all of the furniture we had for storage :) So we don't miss that space. With the expansion of the bath and the closet...we brought laundry up five levels (the main level 1 is down five levels where the other laundry is) which is fabulous, and we lost a few sq ft where we once had a dresser with a TV on it. We will instead have that dresser in the closet and hang a flat screen on the wall. Really...we lost a big amount of sq ft, but since it's more efficient, it's not a big deal. And as to the bath, I don't see ever regretting the change :) Not knocking elbows while brushing teeth is a huge change for the good...and showering without seeing DH on the toilet...priceless :oP We had the place appraised with an as proposed appraisal, and while the master floor (top level) didn't change within it's walls in sq ft, the addition to the bath, laundry and master closet, increased our home value on that level alone by over $50,000. (Closet was $25,000 increased value).

We went for bigger pantry. Still awaiting painting and floors, so no pics yet and I'm only imagining how wonderful it will be. Our kitchen is not big ... 10x15-ish, maybe. But we like the layout, and it's really open to the other parts of the house. As part of the reno, I wanted to lose some upper cabinets, so we did two things: convert the laundry room to a large pantry, and add bookshelves with doors for storage to the ends of the large island. Just across from the kitchen was our laundry room, 10x10-ish. We built out a new laundry/sewing room and converted the previous laundry room to a big ol' pantry. Key to making this work, I think, was opening up the doorway (no door, just a 5' entryway), so it's easily accessible and looks more kitchen-y. Stain, paint, flooring and countertops match the kitchen, so it looks like extended kitchen space, even though it's a few feet away. At least, that's the plan. There's a full-length (10') closet space on one side wall, ready for elfa shelving and drawers inside. The official "pantry." We initially planned to put cabinets along that wall, but decided instead to close it in with two sets of double doors ... easy to access, but I can close the doors on it. We're long-time elfa owners and swear by the stuff, plus it was less expensive than cabinets and more flexible. The other side of the room has a spare fridge and freezer and a 4' cabinet with sink. Sort of pantry / prep / storage space in one room. The other thing I'm really excited about is having lots of light in there ... I hate a dark, cramped pantry! Hope there's at least one useful thought or idea in there. Wish I could post photos now, but very soon!

I did a Kohler Simplice on a similar size double bowl Kohler sink in two houses and I love it. Reaches both sinks and can easily spray the sink sides and any pots/pan within. I think it is similar to the Grohe but you might want check the specs. My girlfriend had the Grohe and paid quite a bit for it. WIthin a couple of years the hose started leaking ruining her sink cabinet, and she replaced it with a simplice and has been very happy. Kohler SImplice

Pam, 640 x 480 is pretty standard. Otherwise, they're too small to see. Since this is a photo forum, we want people to be able to see our photos!

Most of what I have on photobucket is 640X480.

Hmmmm....I have a question then. Just because I reduce the photos to 640 X 480 when uploading to Photobucket, it sounds like that might not necessarily mean that it reduces the size of the file? Or does it?

It should reduce it. But when I use IrfanView to resize my pics, the KB's are way more than when I resize in Paint Shop Pro and use higher compression. So there are two aspects to reducing the pics.
I prefer to have them be 800 x 600 or so, and compressed more. They pop open fairly quickly and the upload is way faster.

Thank you, Joan. I'm new to Irfanview and use it off and on...I like that you can resize/convert a whole batch of pictures. So much to learn.

I do that all the time. Batch operation. Just make sure you put it in a NEW folder and as a double safety, make sure "overwrite files" is NOT checked!

Hey Joan, off subject, remember when we traded e-mails a couple of times years ago about photography? I just got one of those things on Facebook suggesting you as a friend. If Facebook can dig up such obscure contacts, imagine what the Feds can do to check out our associates?!

I guess I'm gonna hafta quit going to those Al Quida training conferences on line.
