What digital would you recommend for bird shots and Macro for flowers. Easy to use for a 51 year old beginner is a must!!! This is more complicated than I thought and am completely overwhelmed!!! Thanks!

Camera shopping these days is pretty overwhelming. It's compounded by the fact that the models seem to change every year, like everything electronic. I'm not familiar with most of the current crop, but I can tell you that my personal experience with Olympus, Panasonic, and Canon have been excellent. Sony, Nikon, and Fuji also have fine reputations in digital cameras.

A couple of websites, DPReview and Steve's Digicams, might be helpful to you. They have a lot of reviews in various categories of cameras.

In addition, you can go to an online vendor such as B&H Photo and browse cameras by manufacturer. When you find a possibility, take a look at the complete list of specifications. Since you're interested in macros, check to see how close to the subject the camera will focus. When it comes to zoom, pay attention to the optical (not digital) zoom.

Nanny, I just discovered that the Panasonic Lumix FZ7 is under $300 now. Here it is at Amazon, a good place to buy cameras.

I recommended the FZ7 to a friend, and she is loving it. I have the 2005 version, the FZ5, which is similar, but with slightly fewer features. To see some of the photos I've taken with it, go to my Flickr pages.

I don't think you could go wrong with this camera, but if you want to keep looking I'd certainly understand. Research is half the fun. :-)

I really liked the Miele, I was looking at the Inspira series. If the Bosch had not been on sale (both had the same floor price), I would have gone the Miele route. But nowadays $300 is a big savings. The Asko was my first choice, but lots of sketchy reviews here and the fact that the service guy I talked to said "Asko, Oh No!" as the repair catchphrase did not really bolster my confidence. I hope Asko solves their quality issues as they seem like a nice well engineered product. The Asko had the best racks at my price point, second only to the Electrolux. I liked the Electrolux, but was leery of buying a new on the market appliance that holds water. (Bad experiences in the past). The Dacor was simply beautiful, I mean nothing even came close. But when I found out that their previous dishwasher design had been pulled from the market due to flooding, I walked away. The Made in USA thing just is icing on the cake. Nothing wrong with foreign made products, but if people sneer at the Foreign name, I will just show them the shiny "Made In The U.S.A." sticker!

b w: I hope I didn't come across as blunt! I tried to convey some advice that was economical and practical. Last year, we purchased 4 acres and in a few weeks, the small, old house and dilapidated barn that are on the land will be demolished - and soon the foundation for our new house will be poured. We have spent a ridiculous amount of hours going over house plans - ourselves, with the builder and with the house designer - it becomes like a second full-time job, without the pay! We have learned so much and feel that we have planned for a pretty high-quality home without being extravagant or blowing money. You have to decide on the needs of your family and your every day activities. If you absolutely want a master on the 1st floor, do it. If you do not care about a big foyer space, do what you like - you may have the kind of lifestyle where only a few guests per year use the front door! When you build a house, it's probably the biggest expense/investment of your life, and the last thing you want to do is move in and say, "I wish the powder room would've been closer to (wherever)". Take the TIME now to analyze details, not regret them when you move in.

Any recommendations for island pendants??

My island is nearly 15' long. We have four pendants and each is 17" wide. So I think three 12" wide pendants on your island might look skimpy. The Serena & Lily ones are nice in the right style of home, but I'm not sure they really match the style of the rest of your kitchen. The wood ones you posted first would go better, in my opinion, although I don't know what the rest of your home looks like. I also think you might not like the light being directed completely down over your kitchen island like these Serena & Lily pendants would do - I personally think it is nice to walk into the kitchen and see the lights on over the island instead of having them just directed downwards, but that's just a personal preference.

You might also consider hardwood for the hallways and stairs, or even just the upper hallways, with carpet in the bedrooms. That way, the wood matches your lower level and you don't get traffic patterns on the heavy usage areas, but still have carpet for warmth and softness in the bedrooms. Not everyone likes wood stairs, but I've never had a safety issue with them and like how easy they are to keep clean. For your question about painting after the floors, a good painter will cover the floors entirely, so they should be protected. You really need to see the floors, whether wood or carpet, to make sure your paint sample works.
