Pentax K-7 or Canon T2i

I am trying to decide between a Pentax K-7 and a Canon T2i.

I have a old Pentax ME with the following lenses that would fit the Pentax K-7:

1) Pentax-M 4024865 Asahi OPT Com. Japan, 1:1.7-22, 50 mm

2) Pentax 5400493 Asahi OPT Co. Japan, Takumar (Bayonet),

1:2.5-22, 135 mm

I already purchased the Canon T2i with the EF-S 18-135 IS kit lense. I have not taken it out of the box and still have a week to return it.

I can get the Pentas K-7 body for $869 thru Best Buy. I paid $1200 including tax for the Canon T2i.

The video on the Canon is compatible with our Apple computer, but I do plan to install Windows XP in the next few months which I assume I would use with the Pentax video.

Thank you for any advise. I have only posted here a couple of times. I am currently using a Nikon 7900 point and shoot.

For me the choice would be a no brainer. I begin my interest in Photography in 1966 wiht the acquisition of a Pentax Spotmatic w/ 50mm f1.4, which was the worlds first SLR to have a built in through the lens light metering system. A year later I bought a Pentaxc Spotmatic II, which was the Spotmatic with the addition of the worlds first "hot shoe" flash mount.
In additiont to the 50mm f1.4 normal lenses that came with the cameras, I added a Taumar 28mm wide angle, 105mm portrait lens, 300mm auto tele, 500mm auto tele and a whopping 27lb monster 1,000mm f4. To date I have put over 100,000 frames through those cameras without a single mechnical problem, in fact, they have never been professionally cleaned or lubed, yet they still work fine, even in sub zero weather.
In 1980 I bought a Pentax K-1000, which is basically a Spotmatic with a bayonete mount, but it also works with the old M42 screw mount lenses. (This camera is considered one of the best manual cameras for serious photo students, and it still retains a market value nearly equal to what i paid for it.)

Next I bought a Pentax Me, followed by and ME-Super along with a Pentax 70-200mm zoom and a small drawer full of Ricoh and Sears lenses with PK mounts plus a Sigma 70-300mm f4-5.6 pk-A macro zoom which quickly became one of my workhorse lenses.

When I retired last June I had a very limited budget but i wanted to move up to digital photography. I looked at both Nikon & Canon but with an average of over $1k for body and lens that was way out of my budget.

I then found a used Pentax ist-DL (6.3mp)body on Craigslist for $250. Not exactly what I wanted but it offered one great feature. I could move up to digital while still retainting the use of all my lenses and accessiories including an auto bellows.

I then got curious about auto focus so I began watcing Ebay and an online auction sponsoered by Goodwill Industries. I found that the Pentax F series lenses were auto focus but they were first designed for Pentax SLR film cameras, however they not only work perfectly on the digital, many dealers sell them as kit lenses today.

I got a Pentax F 100-300mm auto focus from Goodwill for $15 +S&H. (How could I turn that down? ) I followed that with a Pentax F 35-80mm f4-5.6 for $21 +S&H on Ebay and just a week ago I found a new, in the box with warranty Pentax F 18-55mm f3.5-5.6 for $32 +S&H, again on Ebay.
Just tonight I found a new Pentax k20d 14mp with shake reduction and almost all the features found on the K7 for $600 with free shipping, and to top it off, it will still work with all the Pentax lenses and accessories that I already have. In fact, the only features on the K-7 that are not on the K20d are video features and i doubt if i would use them if i had them, although I will continue to keep my eyes open and will probably have a K-7 with 6 months.

One thing that I love about my Pentax ist Dl is that it uses four standard AA batteries and I have 36 rechargable AA's. I have been told that the K20d will also work with AA's but that remains to be seen.

I'm not familiar with the Canon, but I've read a lot of good things about the K-7 on DPReview.

Do not be too quick to dismiss WalMart. Out of curiosity I just went to their website and input the word "Binoculars" in their search bar and boy was I surprised at what I found. I knew going in that Walmart has a very good sporting goods selection and serious hunters are very discriminating about their field optics, but I was not prepared for what I found. I had expected to find moderately priced mid range binoculars from companies such as Tasco or Focal, although in retrospect I think "Focal" is a proprietary trade name associated with K-mart. What I was not expecting to find was binoculars from top world class optical manufactures like Nikon, Canon, Pentax and Olympus, who are primarily known as professional photographic optics manufactures and Bushnell, Leopold, and Steiner who manufacture world class telescopes, binoculars, spotting scopes and rifle & pistol sighting scopes. While I found prices ranging from $27 to over $1200 In my opinion there are a number of items listed in the $50 to $100 range that would well meet the needs of an avid birdwatcher for years to come. In my previous post I discussed the general construction of binoculars but there are a couple more features that I failed to mention. ZOOM - You will see some binoculars that are listed as zoom lenses by example, they may say something like 6-10x. I am sure that zoom lenses are desirable to some people, but in my experience you would probably always use them at the maximum magnification anyway so the zoom feature is moot. In addition, in order to achieve the zoom function they often have to add additional optical elements, which adds weight and reduces the light gathering ability resulting in a slightly darker image. COATED OPTICS-Generally coated lenses are only found on higher class optics but they offer many advantages. In its simplest form they apply a coating that reduces UV (Ultraviolet light). A UV coating does not generally effect the image quality but by reducing the amount of UV light that passes through the lens it will greatly reduce eye fatigue. They also apply coatings to reduce internal light flare, chromatic aberrations and aspherical aberrations. These coatings help maintain edge sharpness and color sharpness in the image and in my opinion they should be considered a very desirable feature.

I have been shooting a Pentax *ist DL (6.1mp) and have just ordered a Pentax K200d to get the "shake reduction", "Live View" and 14.6mp resolution while still allowing me to use all the Pentax lenses that I currently own, going back to the old Pentax screw mount lenses from the late 60's. Now for the original question regarding battery life: Now in regards to the original question regarding battery life: First off, you cannot judge battery life by how many SD cards you have recorded because the number of images you can put on an SD card is dependent upon both the size of the card and what format you are shooting. My Pentax *ist DL will allow me to use a maximum 2gb SD card. With a 2gb card I can record 165 images in RAW format (6mp), 760 in JPEG "Best" mode (4mp), and nearly 2400 images in JPEG "good" mode (1.5mp). Now in regards to the original question about battery life. There are a number of factors that effect battery life. First off, per the table in my Pentax 8ist user manual battery life varies greatly depending upon what type of batteries you are using. Obviously the best battery life is with the special batteries that are made specific to this camera, but the Pentax 8ist will also allow me to use 4 AA batteries so I will only show the comparison of AA batteries. Approximate image storage and playback capacity: AA LITHIUM ION- batteries: (Note that operating temp has a big effect) 23 DegC normal mode 750 images, 50% flash 650, 100% flash 550-Playback 700minutes 0 degC normal mode 670, 50% flash 570, 100% flash 470-playback 470min. AA Rechargeable NiMH 2500mAh @ 23degC 560, with 50% flash 500, 100% flash 440, Playback 470 0 degC 500, with 50% flash 440 and 100% flash 380, playback 400 AA Alkaline batteries: 23 degC 90, with 50% flash 70, with 100% flash 50, playback 140 Not recommended at 0DegC. ................................................. I primarily shoot nature and wildlife photography and I am looking forward to the live view feature because I often shoot macro and very low angles, often requiring the camera to sit right on the ground. Currently I am using a right angle view finder but the live view will make it much easier. On average I shoot about 500 pictures a day and have shot as many as 1500 in one day. When I go in the field I carry 10 2gb SD cards and 5 sets of AA NiMh (2900mAh) rechargeable batteries. While the above table for NiMh rechargeables was for 2500mAh batteries from my experience I find that the 2900mAh batteries perform as well as the Lithium Ion batteries. You can expect to pay about $20 for a set of four AA Energyzer or Duracell 2900mAh batteries and another $20 for wall charger but after having recharged them perhaps as many as a hundred times I find they are a bargain at twice that price. I also bought some generic rechargeable NiMh batteries on Ebay. The ones listed as 2900mAh work fine, but the ones listed as 2500mAh do not perform nearly as well, although they do work well in my external flash equipment and flashlights. When buying rechargeable NiMh batteries be very careful to check the amp/hour rating. They make some AA NiMh batteries that are listed as rechargeable garden light batteries. They are only 1800mAh and while they work fine in those little solar powered garden & walkway lights, they are useless for photo applications.

Although I am currently only working as an advanced amateur shooting for my own purposes, way back in the late 60's while in the Air Force I was professionally trained as a "Still Photographic Specialist" and I worked as a professional photographer for a short time after I got out of the Air Force in 1972. I principally shoot Pentax invented the through the lens pentaprism viewfinder and they were the first company to make cameras with a built in light meter. At the time Nikon was makng the Nikon F, which is unquestionably one of the finest camera ever made, but the Nikon F did not have a built in light meter, Instead they had an optional viewfinder that had the light meter built into the viewfinder and with the optional viewfinder it was designated the Nikon F Photomic. Canon was still making some world class rangefinder cameas but they had not yet got into the SLR market. From 1966 until 2006 I had amassed a collection of 21 ranging from an 16mm fisheye to a full 1,000mm that weighs in at nearly 32lbs including the dedicated wooden tripod that came with it. Pentax lenses, so when I decided to upgrade to Digital I chose a Pentax camera because Pentax has reverse engineered their digitals so we can still use all of our lenses. Needless to say, I am fully comfortable with a totally manual camera, although I do appreciate the conveniences of modern technology. As a sideline, I have been teaching a free photography class at our local senior center for about a year, and as you might imagine I hear your question quite often. First off, let me make it perfectly clear. Just buying a professional camera will no more make you a better photographer than what buying a stethoscope would make you a nurse. Before you buy a camera you have to stop and think about what you intend to do with it. If all you need is a camera to take good high quality scenics and family album type photos then I would not recommend the expense of a true DSLR. Professoinal photographers need a DSLR because they need to select lenses for the type of photography they perform. By example, a news photographer needs a fast normal lens and generally a moderately long telephoto, whereas a sports or wildlife photographer needs super long telephoto lenses while a scenic photographer needs super wide angle and a portrait or fashion photographer needs normal and short tele lenses and a nature or forensic photographer would need macro lenses for super closeups, while a laboratory photographer might need a microscope adapter for their camera. While that Nikon D3100 package is a very good deal, you must keep in mind that it is an entry level DSLR and while it does have enough automation that you can basically take it out of the box and use it as a point & shoot while your learning, but if you decide to really get into serious photography within a year or so you will begin to see its limitations. Basically that camera has different modes, which means you can select Full Automatic mode, Portrait Mode, Scenic Mode, Sports mode, etcetera and the camera will make the necessary adjustments to meet the need of the mode selected. It should also have a manual mode so as you advance it will work with you. For a true beginner making the initial switch from basic Point & shoot to a more sophisticated camera I would advise you to consider what the industry now calls a "Bridge Camera". (In fact, I bought a bridge camera as a backup camera). Generally the bridge cameras have the same basic shape and size as a DSLR and many of the advanced control features but instead of interchangable lenses they have a super zoom lens and they cost much less. By example, Walmart carries a number of bridge cameras from Nikon, Canon, Fugi and Kodak. My personal choice was the Kodak Easyshare z981, which has 14mp resolution and a 26x zoom lens(equivalent to a 26 to 676mm zoom.) It has a 3" display on the back of the body and it will shot both stills and video,and it has all the modes that you will have on that Nikon. All for a mere $238 plus you will have to buy a memory card separately. Another great bridge camera is the Canon Powershot SX30-IS. It has a 35x optical zoom and sells for $350. One word of caution. 200 to 250mm is about the longest lens that you can successfully use as a hand held camera. I would strongly suggest if you buy a camera that exceeds 200mm or 8x you will need a tripod too. Having said all of that, no matter what camera you choose, in the beginning you will feel a bit awkward until you get the feel of it. If you run into situations you don't understand or you have photos that you would like constructive criticism I would invite you to post them in the photography forum and their are a number of very knowledgable ppl that will help you along as you learn.

I enjoy sharing my photos with people who "speak rose". I share these photos sometimes on Facebook with friends and family and who like them but it's nice to share with folks who instantly know who Abraham Darby is. :)) noseometer - the photo color is very accurate. I review and discard pics as I take them if I don't capture what I'm seeing. I was seeing this rose rom the house and didn't recognize it until I went outside since he's normally not as purple as Munstead Wood. The reason I wrote that for you was because I remembered a woman who complimented me on a photo that I posted on Facebook. She told me that she and her husband enjoyed smartphone photography so much they had just bought an X-T30. Unfortunately they discovered it wasn't as easy to use as a smartphone and didn't know what to do. I advised her to go to YouTube and watch an X-T30 tutorial. I felt badly for her and remembered about the $500 camera video that described people who are all jazzed about photography, buy a camera and it sits on the shelf because they can't figure out how to use it. I didn't want to be one of those people so I came up with a plan to help me take photos right away. However, given the complexity of the camera, I've given myself a year to learn all the menus and options; many of the features I'll never use but I'd like to know about them. Photography should be FUN not work! I love my 23mm f2 lens wide angle lens. You might go to the DP Reviews website to read about any cameras or lenses you're interested in. You don't need a program like Lightroom. The images or jpgs will be recorded onto to an SD card; you'll need to take it out and transfer them to your computer. I've transferred the SD card images to the Apple program that's for the iPhone instead of Lightroom for editing. If you're uploading images directly from your phone to Houzz, you'll need to learn to transfer the images from the camera to your phone using the Fuji app which I've heard isn't very good. I'm not sure if there is a camera that lets users upload directly to the internet but that would be a great feature to have if you are used to sharing photos through your phone. So good luck dianela! Let us know eventually what you decide. I don't think there's any rush so just take your time and do your due diligence. People seem to sell their camera gear a lot so you might be able to get something used at a good price sometimes sold by camera stores or online with a warranty. Also, the X-T2 is very comparable to the X-T3 and selling at a good discount because it's been displaced. So you might consider that if you're thinking Fuji. You could save money and apply it to buying a great lens for it. Ann

A third camera has now entered the mix, the Nikon D5000, but wonder if I would I be happy with 12 MP. I really like to see the details.

The Dynamic Range is said to be lacking on the K-7. I don't want to spend all that money and be disappointed.

According to my research, the two Pentax lenses I have are good. There is also an adapter for the my old Pentax lenses making them usable on the Canon T2i. Any opinions on using adapters?

Deb, how much reliance are you putting on that website? I couldn't see the comparison of the three cameras, for some reason, so I did an Olympus comparison. (I'm familiar with this brand.) The site said the Olympus E-520, which I own, has a better dynamic range than the E-620. This is contrary to everything I've heard up to now.

People tried to talk me into getting the E-620 instead of the 520, citing better dynamic range. But I chose the 520 and am more than happy with my decision.

Have you tried doing a comparison on DPReview? I know they do a good job with this.

I went to the Pentax SLR Talk forum on DPReview and did a search on K-7 dynamic range. I took a quick glance at the results, and it seemed to me there was a fair amount of criticism of that model (not necessarily for the dynamic range. If you want to take a look yourself, I'll link the forum below.

BTW, I've seen lots of images in which the dynamic range was improved using Topaz or Redynamix.

Thank you everyone for sharing with me.

I went and looked at the Pentax K-7 at Fry's. I used my lenses and memory card. I had a lot of difficulty getting a decent picture. My old lenses of course could not be used with the auto features of the camera and there was no one to properly show me the camera. Fry's was the only place locally to carry the Pentax D-7, therefore I have decided not to purchase the K-7.

I tried out the Nikon D5000. I think the Canon T2i has a sharper image. I am assuming it is sharper because of the extra MPs. I did also look at the D5000 photos in RAW and from what I can determine they are not as sharp as the T2i in JPEG.

I am feeling very uncertain about choosing between the D5000 and the T2i because of my lack of experience. I do know that I want to zoom in on pictures when viewing them on a the computer monitor, and see the details, therefore I believe the T2i is the way to go. Any comments are welcome.

I have now spent a lot on time on the dpreview site and I am still unsure.

Don't get so hung up on the MP debate, even the companies have stopped that now. Unless you going at, or over 20"x30" regularly, you will be fine on anything 8-12MP, seriously.

90% of your prints 4x6? [nod yes] Dont give MP another thought.

my current most used cameras are 5MP, 8MP, and 12MP.
Sharpness-----Its about the glass, not the MP---its not about the MP. Take into account the LED screen your looking at the pictures through, the sharpness of those little screens can lie about the sharpness of the picture, FYI.
If the salesperson says camera A has sharper pics because of the MP, ask for someone else to talk to for the sale.

MP allow you to crop more away, that has nothing to do with the sharpness of the pic. Learn how to properly frame a pic, cropping is *almost* obsolete.

Okay, I think I hammered that away.

Honestly, when it comes to the cameras, the amateur photog will see little difference in picture results when comparing oly/nikon/canon/(newer) sony of the same caliber, price range.

So find your price range, get what feels nice in your hands, what feels comfortable.

Ken also named the the D5000 his best serious camera.

Joe is right, of course--sharpness is about the glass. But it's also about how much sharpening is done by the camera. Most DSLRs have a sharpness setting that can be adjusted by the photographer. Some people prefer to adjust the sharpness in post-processing.

I haven't read Ken Rockwell in a while, but if I recall correctly he likes Nikon and Canon, and that is all he likes.

Ken definately leans towards Nikon and canon. I just figured since her two finalist were those I would throw in his sourece of comparisons.

Good luck with your choice. Bringing home a new camera is just shy of bringing home a little one! Ha!

First, thank you to all of you for going thru this decision process with me.

Thank you Zitro Joe and Alisande. I read Ken's website and checked out the Best Buy pixel comparison. Good information. I have looked at many comparison photos and info on the internet and I do like the extra pixels for viewing and zooming in on the computer monitor. However, I just need to get closer to my subject when I want that kind of detail.

I am now deciding between the Nikon D5000 with two kit lenses (18-55 mm + 55-200mm) and the Nikon 90 with one kit lens (17-105 mm). I am told the 17-105mm has better optics.

I really like the grip and feel of the D90. I fits in my hand better and feels more balanced. My only problem is the extra weight. I am wonder how important the weight is for any of you. The D90 with the lens on is 10 oz heavier than the D5000 with the 18-55 mm lens, and 8 oz heavier than the D5000 with the 55-200 lens. I am not planning to take it on long trips just short outings. I have some aches and pains in my neck and shoulders, but there is a hand strap available (that I would use with either camera) instead of a neck strap.

The other things I like about the D90 besides the grip and feel are:

Better viewfinder
Larger monitor
Depth of field preview
Stronger build
Better optics in the lens
A little better in low light?
One nicer kit lenses

What I like about the D5000:

Lighter weight
Built-in protection for the LCD screen because it flips around

There is no question that I would choose the D90 over the D5000. I am just concerned about the weight of the camera. The salesman points out that if it is too heavy I will be less inclined to take it with me. Is this true of any of you? Does the weight cause you to leave it behind?

I read a review that compared a D80 (the camera I have) to a D90. As far as weight, it said the D90 weights 1.2 oz more than the D80. The D90 hadn't come out when I got my camera, but I was hooked with the way the camera felt in my hands. I like the weightiness of it..I was always afraid I'd accidentally drop a smaller and lighter camera....just me. Even though I have smaller cameras, I don't hesitate to take it with me anywhere.
Whichever one you choose, I know you will have a great time with it.

The deed is done. I bought the Nikon D90 kit with the 17-105 mm lens and a Panasonic LX3. I am feeling so spoiled.

Lazypup, your enthusiasm for Pentax really got me excited about the Pentax K-7, but the lack of support for Pentax in our area is very discouraging.

We are headed out of town today, I will report back next week.
