Rats! Prob'ly need Knee-scoping done...
Comments (17)Faron, DH just had his knee scoped and cleaned out 3 weeks ago. Meniscus tear and pieces floating around, plus some arthritis scraped off the tibia. I have had 2 torn ACL's reconstructed - 1 in '91 and the other this past Feb, both from skiing. Also had the meniscus thing about 4 years ago too. The ACLs were much worse of course, especially with the pain and recovery, but the scopes truly aren't bad. Everyone else has made comments already about what to expect. DH whined more than I did. He went to 1 crutch for a couple of days and then used a cane after that for a fe days. He's retired so he could rest a lot, but he did do his exercises at home twice a says as instructed. Bug thing is to ensure you build up your quads...they are your workhorse and stability muscle and will go a long way toward taking the load off your knee. The most pain is when you try to pivot or turn a corner for a while...it will be painful when you weight that leg. Best of luck with it, and it is ok to be nervous!...See MoreTorn ACL or general lameness
Comments (5)As a dog owner, whose dog had a torn ACL, who opted not to have surgery, and we did do the "conservative management" technique (though I didn't know it was called that at the time we were doing it), whose dog healed just fine, I am surprised how many people have said that their dog had the surgery. Now, I also know that there are many factors.. the size of the dog, the job of the dog, the age of the dog, the severity of the tear... etc. etc. But really, for most pets, whose life it is to do pet things, like walking on leash, running in the yard, and sitting on owners lap... do they really need a surgical repair? I often wonder how many vets really explain the function of the ligament and the probability of healing without surgery?...See MoreKnee Ligament Surgery?
Comments (16)Our Rottie tore her cruciate when she was 10 yrs old.We consulted with a number of orthopedic specialists before deciding to try the non-surgical route. There were a number of factors which shaped our decision but her age and activity level were at the top of the list. We did acupuncture with a holistic Vet for 6 months, twice a week. We also used some herbal supplements and confined her to a crate and leash walking. No stairs for the first few months. We were very pleased with the results. She never was 100%, but she was not in pain. She seemed to pace herself (we had 3 other Rotts)and knew her limitations. She could climb stairs, hills and had a good, pain-free quality of life. Cancer took her when she was 12. I think our decision was a good one. The acupuncture was very effective. Jane...See Moreacl knee brace
Comments (2)He is as good as new. Spot was about six when he injured his ACL.The vet thought it was probably only a partial tear. He ordered the brace from Woundwear. The instructions to for the vet say to take x-rays to measure the bone length correctly. Our vet just measured the leg with a tape measure. He thought the x-ray would have been a waste of money. After he ordered the brace it took about 10 days to get here. We treated Spot with acupuncture, rest and some herbal pills (I can't remember what they were) while we waited for the brace. We continued the acupuncture for a couple more sessions after the brace was fitted. He wore the brace for about 6 weeks constantly and then we tapered it off. The brace also comes with 2 different strength support rods. We started out with the stiff one and then towards the end changed it to the more flexible one. Spot was the first patient our vet tried the brace on and I can say we are happy that we did it....See Morewisrose
