The lens broke on my ELPH - what should I replace it with?

My Cannon Powershot 230 Digital ELPH just died this morning. I need to replace it before next weekend because I will need a camera for a college visit. My first inclination is to just go out and buy the newest Cannon Powershot. Mine was a 3.2 mega pixel with 2X optical zoom. It used compact flash cards. I really liked it and it was very easy to use. My son (17) says I need higher resolution, better zoom, and one that uses a better memory device like a SD card. Can anyone make a suggestion? I usually like to research this type of purchase for a few weeks, but I don't have that luxury now. Thank you for any help.

Hello,

I've broken two Cannon Powershot SD500. The 2" display screen cracked on both. Still using the second one on Auto only.

Thanks Baymee: Looked at that fuel comparison, seems like oil replacement is the best option. At my age (61) I also have to look at payback time. Here in B.C. Canada, we have gotten a price for a new 86% effecient oil-boiler at $3600 installed. And we already have a 250 gallon tank. Wheras, the propane boiler is $7500 plus, including installation. As for daddo, yea, could look at cheaper fuel, but we do buy the more expensive bio-fuel. 20%canola-80%oil. Eases my conscience a bit-lol. Just in case you guys were wondering what it costs to heat a 1700 sq.ft. home here, it goes like this= 4 cords firewood-$660-60 gallons propane-$275, and this years total oil bill was-$720. or approximately $1700 per year. I suppose in todays world, that isn`t all that bad. The reason for the different heat sources is this old house is a four level split. *And when the power goes out cause of a wind storm, we like to have that back-up. Thanks again for the feedback. If your current washer has been repaired and is working, why replace it now? You've already invested in the repair, I'd suggest continuing to use the machine until it develops another problem. Payback on energy/water savings depends on individual usage characteristics and local utility costs. Payback time at average of four loads per week likely will be longer than you expect, unless your utility costs are very high. Keep in mind that just because a frontloader (or any washer for that matter) has an exceptionally large capacity doesn't mean all your laundry should be bundled together so as to always run the largest load possible. Sorting according to color, soil level, fabric type, and special care items is still important, and even moreso with the newer HE-type low-water and high-spin-speed machines that are less forgiving at mismatching the cycle selection and load type. The wrinkle-prevent (or wrinkle guard, finish guard, wrinkle free, etc.) feature on dryers sometimes lead to misunderstanding of what exactly it does. It's intended for situations in which no one is present to immediately unload the dryer when a cycle ends. What it does is instead of the machine shutting off and sitting there with the clothes crumpled in the drum, it runs an unheated tumble for an additional period of time (either intermittently or continuously) to keep the items moving and fluffed-up. If you normally unload immediately when the cycle ends, the wrinkle-prevent function won't really do much for you.

Interesting. Can CLASSIC ever be 'dated'? Your room is fabulous. In the early 90's we put in gas fireplace in our basement. WE sooo wanted green as you have but were not brave enough and went more of a taupe and used green in the soft accessories. Blue and green are a classic color combo. I vote with ignore the nay sayers and save yourself the bother of 'fixing' what's not broke!!

Re: "In your opinion, can I replace the broken parts only (from Lowe's or home Depot)" - No, it looks like what is broken is a plastic piece. It's not a bolt that can be replaced. Replacement with a new faucet is in order. I always go with cast brass valve assemblies, they cost more up-front, but they don't break like yours did. To replace the faucet, access from underneath will be required. Unless there is an access panel, this will probably require some major disassembly and rebuilding of the tub surround.

Well, I guess I answered my own question. I went out to look over cameras today and fell in love with the Sony Cybershot T100. It looks like a great camera and seems really easy to use. I called a friend of mine to see if her husband who used to work as a professional photographer could check out the specs online. He didn't have to, he owns two! I guess that is a good enough endorsement for me, I'm going to go buy one tomorrow. He even offered to help me with anything I had questions about, but he said it is so easy to use (with a couple exceptions) that I probably can figure it out with no problem. Thanks for the input.

By the way, my Elph bit the dust in an interesting way. I was showing my husband some shots I took the day before and saw my rabbit being cute from the corner of my eye. So I switched to picture mode, adjusted the zoom (before turning so she would not stop playing with the paper bag), the turned to snap the photo. When I looked it was so badly blurred it looked like the picture was melting. So I looked at the screen, and everything I looked at looked that way! Something must come have loose, a lens I guess? If I gently shake it I can hear something rattle. The guy at the shop said I must have dropped it and jarred something loose, of course it was in my hands when it suddenly went blurry. Weird! Believe it or not, I have owned it for 5 years and never dropped it, my cell phone wishes I could say the same about it!
