I am jealous. The cacti flowers burned up in the heat before I made time to take any pictures. I went on plenty mountain bike rides but never took my camera with me.

Are you in AZ?

It looks like Conoslea rubescens. I don't know if this particular form has a name, but there are other types with big spines or different-coloured flowers.

When will this dragonfruit cactus flower?

If the stem of the plant continues to come in nice and thick, you should be good. If it starts to grow out thin and spindly, then it's not getting enough sun and/or nutrients. Generally dragonfruit need ~20lbs of plant matter to fruit (I've heard differing weights given, so take with a grain of salt). Having it top and start to hang down your scaffolding also helps. They get very heavy, so you may need to brace what you have to keep it all upright. Nothing worse than to wait 18 months for it to fruit only to have it topple over and break.

Hi Jeff, That's beautiful!! Is this taken in SD? Is Mike your brother? I'm struggling for an article with a colorful photo to fill the last spot in my club's newsletter for this month - have to finish it up and send it off by Monday while my hubby is in the hospital after major surgery. Would you let me use your photos (credit given, of course) and tell me a little about this genus/species? I'm clueless when it comes to true cacti... Denise in Omaha

I just recently moved to Tucson. I love this heat. Trying to discover it all here. Do you have any must see suggestions?

Hey, joe,
When you get tired of the heat and want to take a trip up into the mountains I'd suggest Silver City, New Mexico. It's about 3 and a half hours east on I-10. (exit at Lordsburg) I lived there for 16 years and could give you a list of great places to hike. A lot of them off the beaten path that most people never hear about.

Saguaro Flower, Saguaro National Park 2006.

Silver City is a beautiful place. It must have been hard to move away from there.

It sure was. Especially to Minnesota.

Have you ever been to the Lower Box of the Gila River?
It's between Redrock and Virden. This was scanned from an old photo. Not the greatest quality but, you get the idea.

Beautiful, Ron! No, I haven't made it there yet, but it is on my list of places to visit next time I'm in the area.

I've been to the Gila Cliff Dwellings National Monument though.

That is some exceptional country with some wonderful views.

Another batch of beautiful photos!
So Ron, you're not enjoying Minnesota's winters? :>)
(that's why we LOVE being snowbirds!).

Rub it in, joan, rub it in.

In a side canyon to the one pictured above there are little 1 or 2 person cliff dwellings.

Here's a cliff dwelling from the Lower Scorpion Campground area. It is on the 'Trail To The Past'...kind of off the beaten path.

The picture is a bit blurry. It was raining. I took a picture from the inside, looking out, also.

The "off the beaten path" hikes are always the best.

Neat photos.

If its cactus pix and rough country this thread is about, I have some of those...

Here is a cactus hanging on for dear life on the side of a water washed draw.
