"Growing your own" would be much less of a challenge if you also ate squirrels.... and maybe rabbits ;-) Got rid of our fruiting peaches, getting rid of the fruiting pear, and can't get tomatoes unless grown up against the house where the critters fear to tread. Once scoffed at a GW suggestion to grow things they don't like... and now find myself doing it. Short list so far of just bird peppers, chives, and other spices like rosemary that they don't bother much. They also don't strip our thorned wild blackberry, though still waiting to see how a thornless variety does. They don't show much interest in the prickly agarita either, but too soon to tell if they'll leave the fruits alone. Am thinking okra might also be okay.

Arch, here's my mother's Ronson set-up: And here are all the accessories in their very own storage space: She also keeps her rolling pin and pastry cloth there, I guess. But darn it, when I pushed the button to flip up the Ronson base, it was a little sticky. A problem with this whole thing is that spills happen (even when the thing is closed) so the crevices can get gunky. Well, apparently the gunk made the button so sticky that now I can't close it. And the mechanism is inside the enclosed base where the motor is. (The motor still works; I accidentally turned it on while cleaning it).

Thanks so far. Yay on the violets! I was hoping I could keep those because they're pretty. And they seem to be producing a great ground cover. They do not have a scent. The minty stuff smells maybe mint, maybe basil? It's been raining, so scents are faint. I've grown basil lots before, but I don't recall having all the sticks left behind. Plus it's an annual, isn't it? And the leaves are a bit shinier, and it is more a summer than a spring plant. OK, I went and googled some info on mint. Looks like it's a perennial and leaves sticks behind in the winter. So I think that's what it is. The PO must have brewed a lot of mint tea or something. I don't cook or brew with it, so I'll likely tear it out, along with the lamb's ear around it. I'd like a few nice azaleas on that north side of the house....

lazypup,
When we lived in MN, we had tons of chipmunks. I was at my local oil change place waiting for my car to be serviced one day and the mechanic came out and asked me if I fed birds. ????? I couldn't imagine why he'd ask that. He held up my air filter and it was packed with sunflower seeds. The chipmunks were saving them for a rainy day. :)
