Growth on my dog's paw

Hi,

I have a puggle with a red bump growing on her back paw. I already spoke with my Vet who adviced to have it removed with a laser. I just wanted to know if anybody had the same issue and what was done.

This is a skin issue. I've had tons of experience with dog skin issues over the past 16 years. After much frustration and expense with mis-diagnosis, I have learned a few lessons.

First. Ask tons of questions. Specifically, is the surgery going to cure this problem. If there is not a specific "yes" then ask why. If there is a "maybe" ask why.

Second. Does the vet know beyond doubt what this problem is, you just mention a sore. When you find out, Google the problem and educate yourself. Find out what causes it, how it is dealt with. If your vet indicates that he/she does not know, consider a consulting with a dermatology vet.

Third. If you do decide on surgery, ask if the sore is definitely going to stay away. If there is not a direct "yes" answer, ask why, and state that you are going to have to research the subject more before making a decision.

I have stated before on this forum my frustration with the veterinary profession in general. I'm now on vet #7 in 16 years, and have spent tons of time, money and frustration because I didn't ask the right questions. My current vet who I love, love love, knows that when a health issues comes up, I am going to consult and research the subject and take the upper hand in dealing this things.

I have had these on my R. canina in Tennessee and they did not strengthen the bush. It might be just my conditions, but after the first year, when I thought I had destroyed all of them, more came back and the third year the rose died. I can't think of anyone within fifty miles of me who grows the old roses that these mossy rose galls seem to prefer, and suddenly they appeared on a five year old canina. Still puzzling that one.

I'm LMAO, because on Friday night, I posted this to the thread about odd smells that you like: "I love the smell of dog feet. All the dogs we've ever had, their feet all smelled the same, and for some reason it's a smell I love. I like to lift my dog's paw and take a big whiff of the bottom of it, putting my nose right up to the pads. LOL! Almost hate to give her a bath, because I know it will take the smell away for awhile." But I just smelled them now, and they don't smell like Fritos!

Anything that does not belong on the skin could be nothing, or it could be serious. Ignoring it is not responsible pet ownership. Since we are sharing stories: years ago, under my vet's supervision, we kept an eye on a little growth on my cat's paw. When it did not go away, the biopsy showed mast cell cancer (rare in cats), which had mastisized , and might have been better dealt with had it been removed the years before, when we first saw it. This killed her in a few years. So. I am now all for biopsies and removing things.

If it's a pus-y lump then it's likely to be an abscess where she has cut her foot or something like a sharp grass seed has gone in and caused an infection. Get to the vet asap because if it's small enough it might be ok with lancing and antibiotics but once it grows larger it will need surgery to clean it out and put a drain in it.

It is very important to find out what you are dealing with before having it removed. If it is a sebaceous cyst for example, you just need to lop it off if you even bother to have it removed (it isn't necessary). If it is a mast cell tumor for example, you need to get extra wide margins and histopathology to determine how aggressive the tumor is, if the surgical margins are clear, and what else if anything needs to be done (radiation, etc). A fine needle aspirate and cytology should tell the vet what it is and what needs to be done, if anything. Everything depends on exactly what the bump is. Like SG mentioned it is extremely important to ask questions about the cause, possible therapies, complications, and expected outcome.

it could also just be a "lick granule" my lab gets them from time to time. basically it is a fungus similar to ring worm that humans get. the dogs lick it alot and this results in a red bump. easily treated with jsut a antifungal spray.

BTW, i would NEVER trust a vet that recommends laser surgery without even seeing what the problem is. sounds more like the type that just wants to get your money than safely and accurately treat you pet's ailments.

My female puggle has been licking her back paw for about a week but we didn't notice anything until last night. She has a red growth on her paw between the pads. Since it's a long holiday weekend, we won't be able to see a vet until Tuesday and I am concerned about it. Can you tell me what the outcome was and what the growth turned out to be on your dog's paw. I just thought it was very coincidential that we both have Puggles. Thanks so much for any help you can give me.

My dog just got one for the first time. Doc biopsied it to make sure. Said it would be gone in a few weeks - it's starting to come off now. My dog didn't bother it at all.

My dog also has a red lump on the side of his back paw. I thought it was just like a human callous at first, but he's had this for maybe 2 months now and it is growing. I haven't noticed him licking it or bothering it at all, but I haven't spoken to the vet yet either. Any ideas?

Have the vet look at it. I have a cocker spaniel and noticed a red growth in between his paw pads. The vet used a needle to extract fluid and found it was Cancer. We had it removed and they sent it off to a lab that confirmed it was Cancer. A year later, he got one that looked similar on his front paw and it ended up just being a benign growth. So, better to be safe than sorry. Now, My cocker has another one on yet another paw. We are going in today to have it looked at.
