We have glass pocket doors between our kitchen and TV room. We chose glass with beveled lines -- one website calls them "Divided Lite French Doors w/ Grooved Glass." I wanted them to be noticeable when closed, so nobody runs into them. They're actually more obvious in this photo than IRL. I absolutely LOVE LOVE LOVE them!! They effectively cut down on football game or kid vid noise so people can be in the kitchen or livingroom without disruption, and look very elegant. We don't have them closed very often, but when we need to, it's great to have them. We just got them through our lumberyard -- I think the same place we ordered all interior doors. This photo isn't the greatest -- I can try to get a better one if you're interested but I have a new camera and haven't figured out how to download yet! Obviously, we haven't bought breakfast table furniture yet!! And can you spot the propped feet of the TV-watching DH?

'Course, there's no way I can prove it. :-) Here are a few examples from well-known writers, cited in the OED: She, too, had one day hoped for a different lot than to be wedded to a little gentleman who rapped his teeth. -- William Makepeace Thackeray, Pendennis Oliver Goldsmith used different than. 18th century ...and when Helen handed it to me, I said, "I thought these things were different than they used to be." -- James Thurber, letter, 31 July 1952 I'm no different than you. -- Frank Shorter, quoted in Springfield (Mass.) Daily News, 3 June 1986 Different than isn't always wrong -- even to pedants. 'Than' is sanctioned when a comparison is made with a full clause following; e.g., The town is different than it was in my youth. It can be argued that it is the more economical, less clumsy construction. To say the same thing with from: The town is different from how it was in my youth. Whichever sounds better to you is the way you should say it, but with the awareness that a person who says it the other way is not wrong, though that person may be willing to say that you are! Different than follows the same model as 'other than' and 'rather than.' The different from/to/than controversy began in the late nineteenth century (1897), according to the OED. All three forms had been used prior -- as far back as Shakespeare -- but the pedants got together to impose their exalted opinions on all the common speakers, and it's been hell ever since. ;-)

Yes those are buddlejas. They have the most interesting scent. Like lilac and honey. Very strong. I was surprised to find that they make decent cut flowers. Who'd a thunk? My roses do get thrips. We've had some rain recently so they've been kept under control, but I do get them often. Luckily they usually only damage the outer petals so when the roses open you can't see the damage as much. Some buds get completely deformed though, and so I have to get rid of them. I did just spray some spinosad for the chili thrips however, because those are the worst and they do a lot of damage.

interesting how the rhymes change over time & distance.. We chanted the "Cinderella" jump rope rhyme a bit different: Cinderella dressed in yella went upstairs to kiss her fella. made a mistake, kissed a snake. How many doctors did it take? & there's one that I came across, don't know *anybody* else who remembers it, but I've always liked it. A little seed lay in the ground & soon began to sprout. "Now which of the flow'rs all around" it mused, "shall I turn out?" The lily's face is fair & proud but just a trifle cold. The rose, I think, is rather loud, & then its fashion's old." & so it mused the livelong day, this supercilious seed, til it emerged one day in May & found itself...a weed. I always remember that little rhyme when I run across a critic!
