I have plenty of viola.... 'blackberry sorbet' mix, which is mostly purple with a little yellow in the face (occasionally a seedling will pop up with more yellow than most) and 'Helen Mount' mix which has more yellow than purple in the face. Best lookin' utility pile of soil I've ever seen! Mine would be crawling with bindweed EEW! I do love how they volunteer in the strangest of places. We have some that seeded and return year and again--and we have NO idea how they got there. It's right on the property line, with bedding rocks on one side and our lawn on the other; it's not the kind of place that they ever would have been planted or flowerbox nearby; it's kinda of a "utility" area on the street-side--you know, the gate opens there, and that's the staging area for mowing, etc. Still, those sweet purple and yellow flowers bring a smile to my face, and I pay special attention so that they don't get any drift when I am out pounding on the bindweed with my lawn-safe weed killer (hey, I'll organic garden everything else but bindweed is my nemesis, and however much chemical it takes to keep it under control, I'm gonna use!). I've also got some big purple violets that keep volunteering year after year--hubby even has hit them with the round-up a time or two, but they're tough buggers. Good thing they're pretty; if they were as invasive as the bindweed, I'd really be out of my mind!

Yes they are perennial here in tennessee, even in my zone 6b. Plant them now!! Won't be long till they are blooming, I had my first buttercup bloom today. While my neighbors and others around town have been blooming for a week. They reseed heavily if allowed, and they shoot the seeds everywhere. LOL, I brought a seed pod in that hadn't shot all of the seeds out and I kept hearing this noise. I thought I had a mouse. Well I went looking for this mouse. Come to find out it was the viola seeds popping out of the pod, lol. I put the pod and the seeds I could find in a paper sack, lol, yes this only increased the sound!!

If they were growing outside, my first though would be cold - many seedling plants (and even those more well established) will take on a purplish cast as a response to colder than preferred temps (both air and soil). NBD and can be ignored :-) Growing inside, a purple tint usually indicates insufficient phosphorus. Since these little guys are showing true leaves, you can do some dilute fertilization now. Any liquid or water soluble at half strength.
