I am guessing redwood bark. Larger ones have bark like that, though thicker & more convoluted.

But you must tell us! (Please?)

Yes, Eric guessed correctly...it is tree bark, but what kind, is NOW the question.

I guess that I am TOO far south for any of you to recognize it. I originally thought it would be an easy ID, especially once we established that it was of a tree.

For those who are still interested, and want one last
hint(s). The tree grows to 60+ feet in height, very hardy, grows in almost any type of soil. It is just one of six different species in the same family that grow wild here. Worldwide, there are about 80 species of this tree.

In the Spring, it has male and female flowers on the same tree. The fruit is small, reddish brown, sweet(HINT) and is eaten particularly by waxwings, and robins when they migrate through here in the Fall.

OK OK!! That's a bit more info than any of you wanted or care for, so to make it real easy......."Palo Blanco".......nuff said.

The lowest temp that we have had in the past several years has been 15F, but only for a short while(8 - 10 hours max), and quickly returning to above freezing. From my experience. textilis is much more cold hardy than any of the multiplexes, which get leaf burn once temps drop into the 20's, whereas textilis gets very little damage from cold or wind. It grows to just over 40 feet here and culm 2.5 inches thick... a real beauty. Tuldoides is about the same cold hardy as the multiplexes, but is a larger much more open clumper. I haven't got a Clones X, yet, but hopefully soon. Oldhamii is quite cold hardy once it is established, but mine froze to the ground it's first few Winters when it was small. It came back larger each year. Very erect, just over 40 feet tall and culms 4 inches thick. Dissimulator is still young but has shown no signs of leaf burn during Winter months. My glabra is not in the best location but seems to look like the large(regular) textilis, only it is smaller. The culms on both plants have a lot of blue/whitish colour on them at certain times of the year. The big difference so far is size. Gracilis is a very graceful looking plant. The leaves droop more than the other textilis' making a nice 'graceful' plant. Look into B. chungii, it too seems to be a bit more hardy than listed and a very striking plant. Others that get a lot of compliments are B. eutuldoides 'Viridivittata', B. pervariabilis 'Viridistriatus', and B. vulgaris 'Wamin'. All are quite hardy here except for the Wamin, but it makes a nice potted plant. Yes, we are extremely dry here. Rain has been going all around us and I can see thunderheads and lightning at night, but none are close. All bamboo in my yard get watered only when I water the lawn, which is one to two times a week, but I am on a very sandy hill, so water disappears quickly. In the heavier clay, once a week max is all they get a watering. There are a lot of bamboos that do well here and would well for you in your area, but I'm partial to the bambusas mostly for ease of containment. B. beecheyana, B. textilis var. albostriata, B. multiplex 'Silverstripe', and B. dolichomerithalla 'Silverstripe' all have survived 15F here also and are some other favorites of mine. The American Bamboo Society lists Mex Weep as cold hardy to 22F and all of the Bambusa multiplexes as cold hardy to 18F. I think they may be cold hardy to even 15F from my experience, but other factors are involved, such as keeping them watered well before a freeze helps keep them from frostbite, and also if they are planted in a protected area or next to a warm house. The B. textilis is the largest and most cold hardy Bambusa that does very well here. Mine has survived many Winters down to below 15F with only a little leaf burn and it has no protection from cold north winds. The B. multiplexes are the next cold hardiest of my clumpers. The Mexican Weeping does very well in these long hot humid Summers, but it doesn't do well below about 26F where it starts to lose leaves from frostbite. Remember, a young plant is less cold hardy than a well-established one. Good Luck Kt

They have some very nice complete systems with wireless cameras that are motion detection cameras and also night vision. Those are the best kind of cameras systems and they can be used with your computer if needed and the images can be sent to any computer on the internet so you can watch what is going on from any location...as long as you have high speed internet. I have one and put one camera down at my entrance to my property to view anyone who might stop at my gate, and it's over 300 feet from the base unit and reception works great. The other cameras I move around my house or porch as needed and they work fine. I also have a seperate sound alarm to alert me when anyone is at my front gate. Good Luck Kt

Thank you all! Karen, nice pictures on your website! Ok, everybody knows where it is, we just need a name for it!...Anybody knows go for it! My Wife and me went there to see a Parrot show, [pics later] in the same time we could go inside these pyramids, [4 of them] each has separate access door, because each pyramid holds different plants an environment. I don't think it is, but just another guess,... living in Switzerland, growing up, remembering, the funniest looking bark was the Acacia Tree??

Could it be, just could it possible be, after all your clues, that it is the bark of the Chokeberry tree?

There is also a Palo Blanco Acacia but it seems to have a sheeting bark. They describe this bark as 'warty'.

I actually have only heard the name in novels--probably old westerns. You made me do it. I googled it.

And I could be wrong.

I had to look up what a Chokeberry Tree was since we don't have them here, at least not to my knowledge. It looks similar, but is not a Chokeberry.

As for an Acacia Tree, or a Palo Blanco Acacia, I don't think they are even related to this tree although the warty bark sounds like it might look similar. I would like to have an Acacia if any of you know where I might purchase one.

While looking up the Chokeberry, I did find that this(my) tree is an Ulmaceae(elm family), so I guess, Konrad, that you WERE right when you guessed 'elm bark', at least to some extent although the exact name remains a mystery...
