I have tried some of the currants recommended for Zone 9 (most are not) and the only one which has been successful is the 'Crandall' Ribes aureum, which resembles a black currant, but with a different flavor. Sweet enough to eat from the bush when ripe, fragrant flowers in spring. There are some native California currants and gooseberries, but I don't think they are very palatable. Why not grow things that people can't grow in other places -- subtropicals, yellow kiwis, etc. Can you grow Natal Plum where you are? The best varieties have fruit that resembles cranberries or lingonberries a little in flavor. Or how about musk strawberries instead of lingonberries? Of course, everybody always wants to grow the things that do well somewhere else.

Black Titania has been a solid low maitance steady producer. Flavor good but not fantastic. Currant sawfly have been a real problem on the red currants and gooseberries. Don't touch the blacks Until last year currants were among or most pest free plants....some aphid outbreaks late spring about all. Last year our SWD infestation began in the black currants....

Hi, Thanks to all of you and Konrad in particular. Sorry I've been out of contact with forest fires disrupting the internet signals here. Will send you an email Oma. Thanks for contacting me. Yes I'm still looking. Are they ripe or well past yet? I had recently just left on a trip to go collect some Great Plains yellow forms, or any that seemed exceptional. Unfortunately I only got two miles out of town and hit a deer. Bad for the deer and bad for my planned trip too. Does anyone see yellow fruited forms and do they seem different or better tasting? I'd love to obtain seeds from any types that seem really good. I think my mail is working now. U of Sask had some breeding program and cultivars out before I think. If anyone runs into any of those from their selections I'd like to learn about what they are like and how they compare to Crandall. This post was edited by agritopiate on Thu, Sep 18, 14 at 13:39
