Rialto Beach near Forks, Washington. I was visiting with my cousin.

See the heart in the clouds in the second picture? That's one of those things I didn't notice until I saw the picture on the computer.

Suitable roses for the ocean

decagon- I dig a big hole, put in peat, Black Kow, bone meal, and composted top soil.This is the mix that is recommended by the Sarasota FLA rose society for down here. If you don't have a dry season, you might skip the peat. Your mix sounds good too. I also have to be very careful not to plant the roses too deeply. A rose needs the tops of its upper roots near the surface or even slightly exposed here in 10a. A couple of mine have died because I planted too deeply and I had to dig up and replant several more. I have read that the further north you are, the deeper the rose should be planted, but I have no experience growing roses north of S. Florida. As far as overcast goes, I guess that could be a real problem. Down here in FLA, we ain't called the "Sunshine State" for nothing! It is very rarely overcast all day long. I imagine that blackspot might be a real threat with 2 months of overcast moist weather.

Fremontodendron 'Pacific Sunset' opinions

This isn't helpful to you in any way, but I think it is interesting: Several years ago I used to park by an empty lot on the foot of Potrero Hill in SF and I noticed a funny looking shrub starting to grow which i later determined was a Fremontodendron. I'm not sure where it came from as I've not seen any others in the area (unless they are out of sight in back yards) except for one that is rather far away in Golden Gate Park. As far as I know I am outside of the normal native range. Very bad google street view image It has stayed relatively small over the past 5 or 6 years with no one pruning it or watering it, and the soil there is kind of awful (serpentine). Nonetheless it is a fairly striking bush when it flowers.

This is a little, light frisbee that twists to fold into a little baggie. I use it as a kitty toy. They will play with it, and kick at the baggie with their back feet then all of a sudden, POOF out pops the frisbee. It usually scares the bejeebers out of them, then they will come back. Smudge in particular loves to lay on it when it's opened. Showing it who's boss I suppose.

Where are you in Washington?

I was born in Puyallup. Don't remember it much though. My parents moved to Wisconsin when I was 9 months old. We did go back to visit every few years though, mostly in the Tacoma and Seattle area. We did take a trip to the Pacific Ocean once for a clam dig and clam bake. That's when I learned to hate clams!

Julie, I live in a very very small town between Olympia and Tacoma. Not too too far from Puyallup.

My camera class is this evening, and I'm soooo excited!
I work for the school district, and this class was set up by the Washington State Endowment for the Arts. It's free to me, and I'm so thankful I can take advantage of it.

Thank you for the compliments on the pictures. It really helps to have something as beautiful as the sunset at the beach to shoot!

I hope that anyone who has suggestions, doesn't hesitate to give an opinion. Like I said, I'm a total beginner, and any help would be greatly appreciated.

Gorgeous. The only thing I didn't like was the horizon being a little crooked. Maybe it's something I notice because I don't have good sealegs. I think you could slightly crop the pictures at an angle to level out the horizon? Nice to find the heart when you viewed the picture later. When I was a kid my family went through a phase where we often managed to somehow include an ugly bin in our pictures!

OH,I know! My danged crooked horizons! I noticed that too. I have about 20 shots of this sunset, and I'd say at least half of them are crooked! LoL Something I'll be working on for sure!

Living on the Gulf of Mexico, I enjoy gorgeous sunsets every evening as well...never tiring of them.
