When I start buckeye or oak in the g'houses, the chipmunks do just as Lucky says, they will rip the nut off the plant to eat the remains and leave the roots and stem laying on the top of the pot, or scattered on the g'house benches. The nuts stay attached for quite awhile, and they slowly dessicate and shrivel, so it sort of depends on the maturity of the seedling, how much damage it does. Sometimes very little, often kills it.

I really had no idea this was available yet! I just got one yesterday, Saturday, from the owner Bridgewood Gardens. We went to an Open house there and he got it from the back area, it was not for sale. The plant I have is by no means a mature plant, but I will take a few pictures tomorrow and post them. chris

Mess; noun Unit of measure used in the south. The other definition (military dining room) don't matter and is not an accepted definition. Used to describe a quantity of greens. Depending on the area of the south, the quantity can vary from five gallon buckets to fifty-five gallon drums. It is universally accepted that a 'mess' of greens is really good eating. Especially with cracklin' cornbread. Usage - I cooked me up a mess of greens and et 'em right down.

They are probably safe to eat, but really sour. I wouldn't go and eat any wild plants unless I knew for sure what they were, though! We had a wild grapevine come up in a bed among some Live Oaks. It got really huge before we realized what it was. The trunk of the vine grew to be about 5 inches in circumference in one season. When the tree service was here to trim our trees that summer, the arborist told me it would kill the trees very quickly. We finally got rid of it with a product called Vine X.
