Not interested in iris anymore, already have 50 varieties and running out of room. The Fernleafs need extra moisture much of the time. So you might plan to water them more often next year. If not watered, they do dry right up and disappear foliage wise. Mine were done by July the first year, brown and gone. My Fernleaf blooms first of all the Peonies, really cute to watch frilly foliage appear, bud and bloom. Mine are near some big Oaks, get shade in midday in summer. Plus Oaks may take a lot of the rain moisture, unless the fernleafs get the extra watering I do. I don't know anyone local that has Fernleafs, to see what they do in other gardens. I think the extra watering helps get them going, be larger plants faster, as well as have the foliage last until fall. For me, no Fernleaf foliage creates a big hole in the bed. Planting now should be fine. I planted mine very late in fall when I got them, had flowers the first year much to my surprise! My roots were pretty pitiful, while yours sound just great. Update us on their Spring performance.

The two posts above are completely correct! Peonies are spring blooming perennials, well past their active growth period and ready to go dormant for the fall. Most of us who buy potted peonies leave them in the pots until fall, don't want to disturb them in the spring and risk losing the flowers! It would be best to see how deep it is in the pot before putting it in the ground, though. I'd think you're no warmer than zone 5 in Nebraska which means the eyes should be an inch to an inch and a half below the surface, slightly deeper if your zone is colder. It's not always safe to just dig out a bit of soil to adjust as this can create a depression to capture water and peonies don't like really wet spots, better to plant them slightly mounded expecting the roots to settle a bit. Foliage on peonies transplanted this time of year should be cut back to just an inch or so above the ground, this will help it go dormant so it can put out a nice plant next spring....
