Why do I always panic when a pet has surgery?

My 4-year-old boy Vinny is being neutered tomorrow and I'm in my worried phase. I know, I know, he'll be fine. But I'll be thinking about it until I know he's awake tomorrow.

Ugh.

I have a pound-acquired Shar Pei that has had several surgeries - lets see .....................

1. eyelid surgery for entropion

2. knee surgery

3. she was hospitalized for days for some kind of poisoning

4. in a week she's going to have her hip joint modified (FHO).

I never worry at all. Why I don't know.
I never worry if I go under the knife either. I guess I'm naive about the bad things that can happen. I trust anesthetics.

A neuter is done in cattle with NO anesthetic I think. Someone tell me if I'm wrong on that. Testicles are outside the body - spaying is technically "major abdominal" surgery.

I had a girl spayed a few months ago and that went very smoothly. This will be much simpler.

Guess I'm just a worry-wart ;)

Hi Nina, "I buy packets that show large, full blooms and when they bloom they are about half the suggested size and one layer of petals instead of three or more." Some seed companies buy their seeds from growers who do not spend the extra money to hire people to rogue their fields, and the zinnia varieties "run out" under those conditions. Generally, the seeds in packets on seed racks are not the best. "I have bought several packets that show bluish purple and when they bloom they are always magenta or towards pink. I don't really believe there is a bluish zinnia." The color pictures on seed packets are not reliable and, even if they were pretty good to start with, the ink colors aren't lightfast, and some colors fade with exposure to sunlight. In general, seed racks are not a good place to store seeds. I have even seen seed packets that were water damaged, but still for sale in a home store. The best way to purchase seeds is by mail order or online sale from a reputable seed company. Higher prices do not always ensure higher quality, but lower prices usually mean lower seed quality. You stand a better chance of getting quality seed if you buy from a seed company that also sells to commercial growers. "I don't really believe there is a bluish zinnia." There are bluish zinnias, but they are not for sale commercially. As a person who grows zinnias as a hobby, I can assure you that there are lots of zinnias that you can't get commercially. I don't think there will be a true blue zinnia until blue genes (I always think of blue jeans when I say that) from other flowers that have true blues are added to zinnias by genetic engineering. That has already been done to get blue roses. But in the meantime, there are bluish lavender zinnias that actually look sky blue when they first open in the shade. But on exposure to sun, that color turns to a lavender. They are not available commercially. "Does anyone know if it could be a deficiency?" Zinnia buds and blooms can be seriously harmed by certain nutrient deficiencies. For the best results, use a soluble nutrient formula that contains a complete range of macronutrients and micronutrients. That includes the usual nitrogen, phosphorous, and potassium as well as magnesium, boron, copper, iron, manganese, molybdenum, and zinc. Plants, including zinnias, also need quite a lot of calcium, which unfortunately is almost always absent from soluble nutrient formulas. Hydroponics growers almost always supply calcium as calcium nitrate to their plants. Garden soil usually contains some calcium, but not always enough for zinnias (or tomatoes). If you have previously added lime or gypsum to your garden soil, it should contain enough calcium. If I see calcium deficiency symptoms in my zinnias (and I do from time to time), I include some calcium nitrate in their foliar spray. Foliar feeding is a good way to make sure your zinnias get the nutrients they need. If I see boron deficiency symptoms, I add a little extra boron in the form of boric acid in my foliar spray. You have to be careful with boron, because it doesn't take a lot of it to reach a toxicity level. I also supply a little cobalt and nickel to my indoor zinnias, but there is usually enough of those in garden soil. And it is beneficial to supply soluble silicon to zinnias, to increase the strength of their cell walls, which makes for stronger stems and leaves, which contributes to disease resistance. Rice growers frequently supply soluble silicon in their fertilizer, because it is important for rice stems to be strong to keep the seedheads out of the water. It may seem counter-intuitive, but sand is not a way to supply silicon. I use a solution of potassium silicate to supply soluble silicon to my zinnias. ZM

I may have found a little bit of hope in getting all of these planted before anymore start to push. I went digging in the yard yesterday and the top 1' of the soil is still unworkable. It no longer holds water like in my other soil post, but the soil is still very sticky/moist.... it doesn't crumble. I have a small hill/slope that water runs off in my wooded area. I dug past the first 1' of soil in this section and found some dry/almost workable stuff. Since I'm surface planting, I may just take my tractor cart back their, discard the first foot of soil and start loading up the dryer stuff. Hopefully by next weekend I'll start to get these guys into the ground... pending no more snow or rain. Do you guys think surface planting will be OK? Any Pros/Cons? My only concern is that maybe later if the plant doesn't root into the native soil. I plan to dig up the grass/soil in a 4' diameter and flip it over so the roots can work their way down. Then just set the plant on the surface and pile dirt around. Ultimately creating a 4' diameter x 1' high mound for each plant. Is it always a dogs fault when they bite??

In my opinion, it is RARELY the dog's fault for biting. Here are the reasons why 1) Aggravating, abusing, cornering, or otherwise leaving a dog no choice but to bite 2) Approaching a strange dog 3) Owner's fault for not training it not to bite (not in OPs case obviously, but many people don't properly train their dogs) 4) Owner's fault for not properly restraining a dog that is currently in training, or is a known biter 5) Handler's fault for not understanding and respecting a dog's body language and adjusting their approach accordingly IMHO, it is partly the friend's fault in this case because Bailey "was in training for not biting" and had access to people. Even if the people were stupid kids with no business poking their hands through the fence, a known biter cannot have any access to people at all. Period. And that is the responsibility of the person in charge of the dog at the time. Now if Bailey was not a "known biter" then the friend is somewhat off the hook, as long as provisions are made immediately to not let that type of thing happen again. Unfortunately they chose to kill the dog instead of make other reasonable accomodations while training. Perhaps these friends were not in a position to properly care for and train Bailey. Which is a very unfortunate situation for your family. The parents of the children in this case also share some of the responsibility because kids ages 4 and 5, as you mentioned, have no business poking their hands through a fence. 4 and 5 year olds can be made to understand how to ask someone if it is OK to pet a dog, how to approach a dog (ONLY with an adult in control of the dog), and not to do things that will make a dog angry. Hopefully since the parents of the children were not capable of imparting this knowledge to them, at least perhaps the kids "learned the hard way" that aggavating dogs can hurt.

I went to see a house last night- its not even on the MLS yet. My aunt lives on the street and saw the sign in the yard. I called the realtor for information and she told me that the house was 4 bedrooms 2.5 baths and had a huge living room. Said the house was 1600 sq feet with an updated kitchen. I asked if there was off street parking (there is no garage) and she said yes. She told me she'd toured the home personally and it was beautiful inside. I was very interested in seeing it and my expectations were pretty high (thanks to the realtor and all her gushing about how beautiful the inside of the home was) After seeing the house I seriously wonder if the realtor had it confused with another (but I doubt it since she tried to point out how "beautiful" everything was inside. First the house is only 3 bedrooms (very small bedrooms at that, one of which was painted hot pink, purple and lime green with the daughter's name stenciled all over the walls (ok not a big deal, a few coats of paint would cover it). The "huge" living room was about 10X13, I certainly wouldn't describe anything that size as large. The kitchen was NOT updated in the last 20 years and the wood floors in the living room needed refinished badly. The carpet was stained everywhere (owner had two large dogs and a 3 yr old) and the owner admitted the furnance wasn't working and they hadn't had it fixed yet. The realtor had never mentioned this. The basement must have been included in the 1600 sq ft measurement because the rest of the house was no where near that. The basement floor was covered in about 6 inches of mud. I asked the owner if it had flooded recently and she said she didn't know as she never goes down there. Oh and the walls had soft ball sized holes in them (owner said her kids did that) ANd the house did not have 2.5 baths. There was a full bath on the 2nd floor and a toilet in the laundry room stuck beside the washer. I don't think I'd even call that a half bath. And the off street parking was a lot next to the house (that belonged to an apartment complex next door. So legally, you are not allowed to park there. It was horrible. We almost fell through the porch when we were walking to the front door (loose rotted boards). It was a huge waste of time and if the realtor had just been up front and said this place has a lot of potential but it does need some work I would have walked into the house expecting the dirty carpet, holes in the walls, and I wouldn't have viewed everything as negatively as I did (after expecting so much).

I do the same thing. I always thought I'd outgrow it, but it doesn't seem too likely.

Probably for the same reason i feel the same way when my DD's,DH,close relatives,good fiends have surgery, because we love them.

Why? Because your his mom and that's your job:))

Vinny is gorgeous. He will be fine, but I know the feeling and there's always anxiety when general anesthesia is involved in an animal or human procedure.

I want to hear the men's take on it. I find that my DH either doesn't worry, doesn't tell, is very confident or is just plain crazy. LOL

You are not alone: I get absolutely frantic days in advance over minor surgery. I guess it's because you can't "explain" to them what's going to happen. You have to "starve" them, then drop them off in the AM and walk away. I can't stand it.
The other day, I pried up the lip on my cat Riley, who's a real corker. Noticed he's got the beginnings of tarter at the gum line. Looks like he'll have to go in for a cleaning. Will have to warn the vet to utilize full body armor for that one. Riley has NO sense of humor.

I'm terrible too. When a pet/animal is in a dire situation, my coping skills really suck. I was so impressed by a recent post by yakima joe - hip injury - about his 3 1/2 mo. old GSD pup that had been hit by a car. GSD's are my fav. athough, I just 'love' animals in general.
Wish I was more like Joe, as I tend to be a basket case when one of the pets is ill or whatever................

That's great. My boys have always done fine post-surgery with the exception of my middle child. He would not leave the site alone. We put an E collar on him, unfortunately it was too short and only caused irritation near the surgery site, longer E collar, he couldn't pick his head up to do anything. We finally put him in an one of my DH's large T shirts. I wish I had a pic on disc. He looked so funny walking around in his Lucky Brand T-shirt. Of course, we had to tie it up in the back so he wouldn't trip, but it did solve the problem. My vet was so surprised since males usually sail through this kind of procedure and don't bother with the site. Go figure?

Did you use him for breeding before the surgery? I only ask because you mention he is 4 yrs old. He is one beautiful Golden.

labmomma - I did point him and intended to finish his championship, but for the past two years DH and I were involved in a move, new jobs, issues with elderly relatives, etc. and dog shows fell on the priority list.

He also has some problems with inhalent allergies, something I personally would never, ever take a chance reproducing. He's a great dog in terms of conformation and temperament though - and definitely my baby boy :)

I enjoy showing as a hobby and have two young girls that I hope to finish. Vinny thinks of them as his harem ;)

labmomma My observation of men tells me that most men would rather die than admit to a woman they are concerned about a pet. Notice i said MOST not all.LOL
