Actually, it was a post from 2013 and looking at my photos here I realize just how much daylilies fill in a bed in 4 years! LOL. Actually, I think these were made even earlier, like in 2011 and 12 so that would be 5 years ago. I guess this year I should update the forum with what the beds look like now. I have added MORE beds since then....what a nut I am for daylilies. So to answer your question, I never have had grass existing beneath these beds. These are in areas that were formerly forested so I was covering up tree roots, stumps and rocks more so than grass or vegetation. Essentially I put in these beds using the rocks I dug up. I planted the grass after I made up the raised beds. I know some people do make raised beds atop lawn or grass and lay down several thicknesses of newspaper before adding the soil. Maybe someone else who has done so will chime in? Good luck with your beds!

Thank you Susan. That was very helpful. I have clay based soil and an area where water likes to collect, but we are dry every August. It is pretty shady so might not be that great.

How old is your KBG? I had no fungal problems for the first three years (sodded), then last year I had some fungal attack. I let it ride this year to see what would happen and I got even more outbreak. I had to replace several patches with new sod. I did find a source online that said that sod younger than 3 or 4 years tends not to get fungus until it ages to that 3 or 4 year point. If that is what happened to me, then it might be an every year kind of thing. I just don't see other lawns in the neighborhood, including my next door neighbor's, getting attacked by fungus. So don't know yet if I am going to go nuclear and get on an anti fungal regimen next year, or maybe let it ride again. Sorry I couldn't give a clear answer.

Your 46-0-0 might be fast release, but there might be some coated urea that is slow release. Avoid that. The idea of the 'winterizing' is to dump lots of fast nitrogen directly to the roots after the grass top has stopped growing. Ideally the fertilizer will be completely gone from the soil in a few days/weeks, but it remains stored in the roots over the winter. Then in March your lawn should awaken earlier than lawns which were not treated with the high N in the late fall. A lot happens under ground over the winter.
