SLR sensor question...

Those of you that have an SLR camera, how or do you clean your sensor?

Mine is a bit dusty...I used a baby de-snotter suction thingy (i dont have kids, so i dunno the real name) to blow mine off with some success, but has anyone used he swabs with eclipse cleaning solution?

Is the process as scary as I have heard?

I use the sensor sweep. Don't want to use to blower/sucker as it may push dust further into the camera

I was wondering this myself, Ashelton...

how do you know when it needs a cleaning? I've changed lens a few times...Is it when you change that dust gets in there? or how bout when it sits...I leave mine out to be easily accessible...Should I be keeping it under cover?

I bought ours at Home Depot. It was only $10! It's programmable. I have it set that when dusk comes, it turns on the lights for 5 hours. It can be set to many different lengths of time. It just plugs in the wall outlet and you plug a lamp or whatever into it. I have 2 of those compact flourec. One on each end of the GH. Works great, doesn't suck lots of power at all. The other upside, is that unlike a manual timer that you have to set an on/off time and daylight changes, this one automatically adjusts with the changes in nightfall. Not sure what you mean by linking smoke detectors and motion sensors. With alarm systems that I install (Canada) we either run separate, 12vdc smoke detectors and place them near the mandatory mains-wired ones, or use an approved relay that goes at the end of the interconnect chain for the mains-wired smokes. From the relay, we run back to the panel and that provides the smoke detector signal. Advantage is, less stuff stuck to your ceiling, and less smokies to replace when they expire. As for motion sensors, if you're talking about security ones, they have their own wire (usually) run back to the panel, either station-z (4 wires, untwisted) or cat 5/cat 5e.

Sure ... an electrician can do it. But probably not without punching holes in the wall and running new cable. Below is how your wiring is PROBABLY set up (but there are multiple ways it could be set up). Power from the switch goes to the front door light and then travels on to the other two lights. What you'd need is on the right in the diagram below. EITHER the blue line which is a new cable from the switch to the front door light (so that both the constant power and the switched power is available at the door light box). OR the pink line that carries the switched power to the 2nd and third light. Which line is easier to run depends on your specific situation. As I said, there are other ways that this could currently be wired and it is possible that you already have something equivalent to the pink line setup already and no new cables need to be run, but I doubt it. Opening up the switch box (with the power off) and investigating what wires are there could confirm the situation.

The sensor needs cleaning when you can see specks in your photos. I'm guessing it's the lens changes introduce dust in, not sure if just sitting does. With the 20D I would have to clean with every lens change, the 40D is much better with the automatic sensor clean when you power on off and back on.

I have used the chopstick, lens tissue paper and alcohol, very cheap and it works...but do it very carefully!

Juanita, look at my other post titled Desoto Falls. Paticularly in the bottom left quarter of the actual waterfall, you can see several dust specks...

From what I understand, dust is just a miserable fact of life...lol. I think it happens most requently when changing lenses. I try to change mine with the camera facing down....dont know really if it helps, but in my mind it does! :)
