I have three small beds for my garden and flowers, and was wonder about the lime, like everyone else I've tried every brand of weed killer that says they kill wild onions, and they all lied, including the barrier mat, the little beggars shot straight through, no way to pull the bulb through the barrier. If there's a possibility lime can rid my gardens of wild onions, great! My problem with lime was that I always thought that was one of the ways you added acid to the garden, guess I was wrong, I never had to. Can someone explain? I have planted catnip every year for my cats, last year the bed was full of wild onions. If I pulled onions I also pulled catnip plants. The cats would not touch the catnip, and the wild onions were the only thing that was different, and this year, It has defied everything I've tried. I thought I had got rid of them and planted the catnip seeds, only to have the wild onions sprout back stronger, the seed is still about a week away from growth, I'm wondering if I can try spraying again? I read a article earlier that was suppose to be a pro Gardener talking, that said Otho extra, weed be gone, for crab grass, he says it will cut the waxy surface of the wild onion leaf and kill the bulbs Does lime have to be mixed into the soil or is it absorbed by watering? For those that say wild onions don't hurt the rest of the plants, they do absorb water needed for growing plants. This year our water levels are already low, if it comes down to a watering ban, it could be a major difference to your plants. Thanks ahead of time!

I was leaning towards doing that, and now since you said that, it's convinced me to put them back outside because I just don't know exactly what a person would have to do during the winter to keep them alive. I think I'll keep them in the container they're in on our back porch just a little while yet, like maybe a week, and then put them out under an indigo plant before it freezes. That way if they have to hide under some leaves they don't have to hustle at the last minute since we shouldn't get a frost for at least 2 weeks ago (hopefully even longer because I hate the thought of winter coming). I've actually been working in the indigo section of the garden lately mixing sand and peat moss into the ground (our ground has lots of clay), laying down newspapers, and then putting leaves on top. So the duskywings will already have their beds waiting on them. :) I figure that probably not too many people try to raise duskywings, going for the prettier types of butterflies instead, so I look at them as a kind of underdog and like to help them. My problem is that I like to help too many kinds of butterflies and then wonder what happened to the spring and summer. It starts out being lots of fun but towards the end, I'm there rooting them on to get on with it and pupate. lol Cathy

I just yank or cut the tops off and feed it to my chickens, they love it. I like the fact that it comes back so fast so I always have a handful or bucket full to toss in their cage. They get nice greens to eat all year long, you should hear them cackle with excitement as I walk up to them with handfuls. It doesn't seem to bother any plant I have growing in the pot so the pot is serving a dual purpose. I've had to keep the chickens caged up lately because a hawk has killed a few of my free ranging chickens. Lou

MGs are annuals. So, if you pull them out before their seeds mature, they will be finished. Their seed pods stay intact on vine for a good while and you will have a chance to pick them, keep them or destroy them. Lets suppose that somehow some seeds escape and grow next year. Do not fear! it is easy to pull them up as we do with tens of weeds all the time. I let some wild MGs to grow between my tomatoes. It is beautiful. they do not harm tomatoes even if they winde around tomato branches. You can trim then if they go beyond where you don't want them to.
