My friend is on assignment in NYC, and she sent this shot of Central Park taken from an office window.

Beautiful! I always wondered what Central Park looked like. I have heard a lot about it but had no idea how pretty it is.

great shot of the skyline. I don't know if I would want to be up that high! I see they still have some snow there! We just got rid of ours this week, thanks to an unusual few warm days.(Chicago area)

Help With Warmest Coat for New York City Life

As a life-long New Yorker the long down coat is lovely but not a good fit for NYC. It only snows occassionally, but rains year round. A long coat would drag all over the floor in every classroom or lab. Labs have small lockers and in classrooms most just drape their coat over the back of the chair. I think the average winter temp is around 40 degrees. Just like the heat wave we are currently suffering. The coldest days of 20's only last a few days. The climate has warmed considerable in the last 30 years. Unlike other places, she will have the warm subway to wisk her from place to place. Fashion at the university level in NYC can go from chic to wild and everything in between. She will need gloves and either a hood for the rain and cold or a warm hat. Boots are a must. A short waterproof boot and a treaded boot for the few snow days that may or may not occur. We had no snow last year and the year before a huge storm in early November, then nothing after that.

I like the living room and both bedrooms, but the china closet is my favorite space! i don’t care for the dining room at all; if you’re going to swath a room in fabric it should be more interesting than ticking— and I love ticking. Her singsong voice is a type of speech that I find very off putting, especially when so many sentences end with an upwards tone like everything is a question. She has the coastal grandmother thing going on in spades, which is odd for someone her age. I would expect it from older people or the very young for whom it is a novelty.

I too remember lining up for the first polio vaccines (and later the sugar cubes in the school cafeteria) in our small town. My Dad was the March of Dimes campaign chair and I was old enough to go with him to a few events that summer. The little sister of a good friend contracted polio and spent some time in an iron lung. She survived fine but wore leg braces for quite a while. She ended up as a state poster child when the campaign began. Her mother and my Dad were 2nd cousins iirc thru their mothers, so in those days, family truly meant a lot. I also recall getting vaccinated for typhoid and tetanus and everything else that came along, No questions asked. Thank you, mom and dad.

Great picture....we were there in December but there was no snow.
We are going back in May so I will take lots of pics to share. Our new grandson lives in Manhattan with his parents....not far from Central Park.

Central Park is one of the Great American Spaces. It's huge, beautiful, perfectly planned out by Olmsted, and used by millions of people for a wide variety of activities. My brother in law lived in Manhattan and we always visited the park when we were there.

Actually, I don't think there's a formal list of great American spaces, but there should be. Might be a good topic for a posting...
Central Park.
Grand Canyon.
Chicago - where the big fountain is by the lake.
Las Vegas strip - whether you think it's ugly or beautiful, you can't deny that it's a gathering place for America.
Probably Times Square.
New Orleans - once and future, hopefully.

Excellent picture! NYC is my hometown, but I've lived in the country for a long time now. I look at that shot and think that Central Park is the only part that makes any sense. :-)
