Toy Storage Solutions
Comments (14)I remember that phase. We had toys in every room of the house. They need to be where you are so you can watch them though, so that means you may have to have toys in your living room or kitchen or anywhere else. Hang in there. They'll eventually get old enough so that you can say "no toys in the living room" when you need to keep it clean. The good news is, with twins they will soon be content to stay back in their bedroom and play with each other. My twins are 10 now and didn't cling to my pant leg for nearly as long as their older sisters. They're so much more independent. We have a walk-in toy closet now with shelving all the way up. I keep toys with lots of pieces (like legos) up high so they have to ask to play with them, that way I can make sure they have the last thing put away first. I never thought I would be able to get my kids to stick to a one-thing-at-a-time rule but I did somehow. We have toys sorted in tubs and they've learned that they have to put away one tub to get out another. It doesn't work perfectly but I can walk across their bedroom floor MOST of the time. lol When my twins were toddlers, I just had a couple of big laundry baskets to keep toys in that were in the living room. They're light and easy to carry room-to-room and easy to carry back to their bedroom. I need better storage though. Wish we had an ikea store here. I'm always reading about things people have found there....See MoreStorage on back of cab doors--my solution
Comments (19)Yes! I used the wire hooks in my old kitchen, to hang cooking utensils next to the stove (they had to go on the side of a melamine cabinet). The hooks worked great and came off with no trouble when it was time. I just brought home a new batch of them yesterday to hang measuring cups and spoons on the door of my baking supplies cabinet. I saw that they have larger decorative hooks too, and I am contemplating using those to hang towels so I don't have to drill holes through the tile (whenever our tile gets installed...). Some of the big hooks are metallic, either chrome or brushed stainless or ORB-looking (some are made of actual metal too). I am thinking those might look nicer than the white plastic ones. I also probably need to retire the magnetic write-on wipe-off board that I keep on the fridge for jotting down grocery needs (the board is at least 15 years old and has ads for cattle vaccines on it). I already have some picture hanger things that I haven't used so I should probably move the grocery list to inside a cabinet door, maybe a pad with paper I can just tear off and take to the store. I saw the caddies you mentioned when I was getting the hooks at a local hardware store. The ones I saw were about the right size for sponges or scrubbies but without the vent holes at the bottom....See MoreBlind Corner Cabinet Storage Solution
Comments (1)I purchased elfa by container store pull outs for my deep cabinets. Mine are 13” wide x 2 feet deep. Not sure if they offer more narrow. I love mine and easy to install myself....See MoreWhat's an attractive sun room storage solution?
Comments (12)Thank you all so much!! I'm already loving your suggestions. Also, I should have clarified: that light colored couch IS on its way out - it's just hanging out here until someone buys it. So that will actually be another issue I'll have once it's gone - coming up with some kind of toy storage to go along that wall (or just figuring out what to do with that wall). I love the idea of an outside storage for things we don't "need" inside but that we do need on our way back. On the other side of the window is our kitchen and the space that used to be the living room but will now be our dining area. Here is a (not great) picture of it. You can see the sectional used to be here but it's a loooong story and we moved it to the sun room because it doesn't fit. The purpose of the sun room is officially: living room! The mudroom aspect isn't ideal, but borne more of necessity since that's our access to the backyard and we have to keep our shoes (at the very least) somewhere. Another clarification: that door is just for getting to the backyard (which is a many times a day occurrence). We generally go in and out for out-of-the-house-errands through the garage, which is in another part of the house. Kids number only 2, which is by no means a lot, but animals right now are 19 and counting! I agree that this arrangement is by no means ideal. We came to it after many many months of struggling with even worse layouts/making the furniture we have work as best we can in (what I find) an awkwardly laid out downstairs. Thank you all for your help!...See MoreDLM2000-GW
