Backing up a bit - since MOLES are insect eaters I doubt anything you plant will deter them, they are after the grubs and worms in your soil and not your bulbs. VOLES are plant eaters and can do a ton of damage in very short time to your garden. Getting rid of them is an on-going battle. There a million ways to control their populations and you pretty much have to try each one til you find the one that works best for you. Keep in mind that there are lots of lists out there that claim to be deer-proof plants or pest-proof plants and plenty of people on this very forum have commented in the past about how the deer or rodents did in some of these same "proof" plants. What works in one yard may not work for you. Voles don't read these lists so they have no idea they aren't supposed to be eating certain things. Again I plea for a government sponsored literacy program for animals,,, we can send a man to the moon, can't we teach a rat to read???? Over the years I have come to the conclusion that no matter what I do I am gonna spend money on more plants. Whether I have the space, the money, the skill, seems to play no part in this decision. I buy plants all year long from every vendor available - I have no control over this addiction. Therefore, it really doesn't matter how many plants the voles eat, for I will be replacing them anyway. My yard has a vole problem. It is most evident in the early spring before the snakes have woken up from winter. Once the weather gets reliably warm the snakes seem to keep things under control. I help out the snakes by building little snake restaurants around the yard wherever I see vole damage. I build them by sinking an open plastic bucket into the ground up to the rim. I place some sticks or small boards over the top and then cover with either the lid to the bucket or a small sheet of plywood. Voles and all sorts of wildlife stumble into these pit traps where I have placed pieces of apple and stale bread for them to eat while they wait for the snakes to show up. The snakes can climb in and out of the bucket without and difficulty.

Welcome back Rita,i asked about you a few weeks ago as i hadn't seen you around for awhile. Your daffs are gorgeous,you folks are having better weather than those of us in NOT so sunny s.calif.Here we are mid afternoon and it's only 57 degrees here,cold,very windy and rainy,and it's been like this off and on for weeks.We do get an occassional day where it actually makes it to the 70's but they seem few and far between.Anyway TFS your beautiful daffs. it looks like tho outer... oldest.. first to emerge leaves are getting damaged by the stone ... the stone is the problem ... opening wounds.. and then something else comes along to attack the damaged area ... so treating the later disease ... would not really solve the problem ... and dont get me wrong.. this is just an observation .... i would not treat them for anything ... the next step in your garden evolution.. will be rock removal and application of mulch ... if you get the gardening bug ... in a bad way .... prime bulbs of this type can be as large as a clementine.. i suspect your gift was not a prime bulb ... and that is why the flowers do not look like the ones @ the link i gave ... do you know how to care for spring flowering bulbs??? ... you fert after bloom.. and leave the leaves to yellow and brown in mid summer.. during which time.. they are storing food for next year ... if you remove the leaves before.. you wont have much.. if anything ..next year .... and the key is.. to mark the sppot.. so in fall .. you dont dig them up.. planting something else on top of them .... been there.. done that too often.. usually cutting the bulb in half with the shovel ... ken

I have replanted what will fit in the spot they were removed from. Now it is wait and see. And find someone who is interested in the other two bucket loads that came out of that spot. One neighbor has planted some to "force" for winter blooms. They haven't had the proper chill, so I don't know what will happen.
