No pics, but wanted to say I fell in love ....(dilemna?)

with the NIkon D40...You would think i should be good with new cam I got from kids for Xmas, an Olypus SP510uz...but I stopped by a cam shop run by a family...I was looking to find a tele lens for the Olympus...there in the case was the Nikon...He took it out showed me how to use it, actually let me hold it with no strings attached like at Wallyworld or CC...showed me features on it...and I knew that was the kind of cam I was looking to get...I really want it! Only I don't know how to get another one without hurting the kids feelings...Now what would you do?...Don't get me wrong, I really like Oly and they are a good P&S camera, he informed me one of best ones to hit the markets (at this time)...but how can i, what can i tell...the kids? They were just so all pleased and so was I when they presented it to me...If only I hadn't touched that Nikon...

How's this for a plan: you send me the new cam from x-mas and tell the kids some big ugly dude in the park took off with it while you were at the park.

And, rest assured, the "big ugly guy" is great at keeping a secret. You are going to have sooo much fun with that Nikon.

Richard, I live out in the woods in southeast Mississippi, and I see pileateds more and more every year. I think I've been hearing baby pileateds lately, but I can't verify it yet, since I haven't actually seen them. One day I was walking down one of the paths I've made through the woods and "whoosh!" a pileated came flying right by my ear! I'm sure he/she didn't realize I was there, since they're really pretty shy birds. Still, it was a thrill! Whenever I see one, I can't take my eyes off it! And about the B&B, it's SOOO easy to propagate! I just dug up a good looking runner that really didn't have much of a root system of its own, planted it in a pot, put the pot in the shade and kept it moist, it made more roots quickly, I planted it, and now I've got another B&B, this one on the other side of my garden gate. You can't beat the electric blue flowers of s. guaranitica and the hummers and butterflies - especially sulphurs - love it! Sherry

I came from polished AB pre-remodel and have now put in another black granite - not AB. I love black granite. The one i have now (blues in the night) is a black granite with cobalt blue flecks in it (like the gold flecks of Black Galaxy) and a few clear quartz veiny bits here and there. Yes, in my experience, black granite shows dust and crumbs. The AB showed it very clearly - it is slightly less clear in this new black granite because the flecks can disguise some of the crumbs. Personally, while I love my blue-flecked black granite, the polished AB was easier to maintain. Why? Because it showed the gunk perfectly and so it was easy to clean up. It's a kitchen counter! It ought to be clean! I don't like the idea of cooking on a grimy countertop. In my house, surfaces do get dusty (we probably need to vaccuum more often but we're not home enough to do so) and it is easier if the dust and grime shows up clearly so that it can be attended to. I clean my counters a lot more now because it is a touch less easy to tell if the counter is actually clean. NOt only that, but I wipe the counters down, obsess over a spot that turns out to be a granite inclusion, conclude as much, step back to see what I might have missed, revisit a few spots - oops this one's an inclusion, nope this guy was an actual crumb, bend down to change the viewing angle to find another perspective from which to find unattended areas - wipe down the areas I missed ... . Do you see what I mean? If you want your counters actually clean rather than just looking so, Absolute Black tells you exactly where to focus. It was easily the easiest counter I've had. I love Blues-in-the-night and would get it again and again and again because I adore those cobalt confetti-like inclusions. But even it - for all its black graniteness - is more work to maintain than the AB, in my own experience. A more detailed, dirt-hiding granite would make my head explode, I dare say.

Tea, Sky and Johnatemp, thank you!! I can't wait to get the piece in the GR and I'm really glad that we lucked out on this credenza. Johnatemp, yep this is going in the room with the plaid silk drapes. Most of all, I am so very proud of my DS. He has adjusted so well to his first quarter at college and all he talks about is getting into the international exchange program next year! He just missed the Dean's list and got himself a job working at the dorm desk. This in spite of us telling him that he didn't need to work his first year because we wanted him to focus on his studies. He is spending his break in NY working at his old job at the UPS store. I just beam everytime I think about him. Finally, I luv, luv, luv the Maitland Smith piece but everything in good time. I got a great bargain yesterday and i'm happy.

Clueless, you're much too kind. Allow me. practigal, ho hum? Which part bores you, the overall creamy caramel tones, the beautiful island, or the unusual but incredibly effective use of stained and painted cabinets - and the echo of that mix in the choice of cabinet knobs? Perhaps the use of carriage doors that open to the outside garden? This kind of space thrills me as the antidote to the ever popular but sleep inducing all white kitchen situated in an environment so un-ornamental, it is completely removed from context. local, there are some wine glasses and display items in the hutch, but who says drinking glasses are stored in it thus fouling traffic flow? For all you know drinking glasses are stored in the tall cabinet next to the fridge - which is where I'd put them. DC, and design, the black fridge and range provide contrast, something a lot of kitchens don't deal with well and simply avoid. I think black adds a great touch of visual interest that the space would be missing without them. I'm with you on the sidesplash. Jann, what poor design? There's not a single error in function to be found here. It's a galley kitchen. jakk, the sink and range actually are offset, and if aisle widths are correct, should be fine. veda, someone who cooks would fall in love with the economy of movement this kitchen offers. Everything is within reach or a couple of steps. And those of us with advanced degrees and siblings with advanced degrees, and parents with advanced degrees tend to live in homes with a lot of books in every room, so a kitchen like this has a special appeal, both to us, and to those who love to read. Don't get me wrong, I understand a kitchen like this one is not going to be to everyone's liking - it's not the size of the Met, there's nothing painted grey or blue, there's no soapstone, in fact there's nothing trendy in this space. That's why I love it, that's what appeals to me every time I look at these images. It is a model of intelligent, efficient beauty, and when do we ever see that in a kitchen that also feels like a warm and wonderful family space? I remain smitten, and I love that clueless was kind enough to share her crush.

You sound rally close to your family, I might suggest waiting til the camera is a year old then think about getting it, the D40 isn't going anywhere.

I figure your kids are adults, but it might burn them a bit. Sure they will recover, but it would still suck for them.

I dont want to be in your shoes...I might actually scoop up the camera and keep it secret for like, hmmm, 8 years...I am no help.

I was just so amazed how quickly it was to focus, shutter lag not bad at all, the continuous shooting, macro...The menu...very user freindly...he put another lens on by Nikkur(?), I don't remember size, but it took a nice 'across the 4-lane street, small sign on building' picture!...

I like Joe's idea...always a good idea to have more than one camera.

You might get more responses at the Kitchen Table forum. It's more of a family relationship question than a photography question, anyway.

Yeah, you need different cameras for different things, someone told my husband that, that's why I always have 3 cams (after all, guys needs more than one tool, right?). A purse cam (does the Oly fit that niche?), a smaller cam w/x12 optical (my Sony DSC-H5) that is light for when I want to attend an event (like a pow-wow, picnic or somewhere a dsl w/lenses is too heavy) and my Digital rebel and lenses (like for driving through Utah or a wildlife refuge).

When I want something, I can make any excuse work...ask my wife. She has her sewing and embroidery things, I have my plants, moutain bikes, dirt bikes and camera stuff.

I am the worst person to take shopping, most people aske "should I buy this?", trusting the other person will talk them out of it. Me, nope, "Do you want it? ....then get it." Of course this is after bills are paid, and you have the money. I don't believe in debt, or credit cards. My house the only load I have

Since we are just talking about dots here, you would think a computer program could take a three or four MB pic and up convert it to 8 or 12 fairly decently to print off larger prints. But, I've never seen one. Of course, I've never really looked for one. And, I'm sure for enough money there has to be one. But, if it was economical or very effective, you'd think some of the picture printing places would have it. Most consumer photo prints aren't exactly looking to add crucial details to spy photos.

I can't quite see why a computer can't extrapolate and "fill in the dots" to blow up low res picture fairly accurately. The outlines and colors are already there. I've got some nice 3 meg shots I'd like to print off in larger sizes, but, get the same from the printers, 'they won't blow up well from that size'. Just venting a little.
