I do not believe it is a Gallium for the reasons I gave above. G aparine is extremely familiar to me and I'm certain this isn't it. In addition to the five petalled flowers, stalked drooping buds and incorrect leaf joints, the leaves and stems appear to be smooth and much stiffer than Galiums.

@floral_uk z.8/9 SW UK Floral, it's a marvelous, carefree, cast iron plant. I'm not surprised the flowers were missed by the person that originally planted the ones in question. They are pretty much "meh", and insignificant. Also hidden among the foliage. I wonder if the flowers are self-pollinating. I need to research that. But the leaves are very decorative among hostas and ferns and the fairly prolific red berries (though they're on very short stalks) make up for the blah flowers. They are drought resistant, multiply much more readily than aspidistra, and are evergreen. But unfortunately, I had a bad vole and ground squirrel infestation at one time, and evidently rhodea roots are plant caviar. * A quick perusal of Google (gah....sometimes I hate it) gave totally conflicting information about Rohdea's ability to self-pollinate; literally a cocksure "yes", AND definite "no". I'll have to find more authoritative sources.
