nikon Coolpix 8700??

I love my Nikon Coolpix 8700 for some types of pics....closeup indoor and all outdoor.....but for auditoriums or indoor sports I can't find a setting that will give me good pics. The instruction book gives me a headache... I just wish it would say "If you want 'this' then do 'this'....kind of takes the art out of it but at least my pics would be good. Any one have suggestions for "Nikons for idiots" info?

Well, these are the hardest areas to take pictures in. Can you post some of your pictures so we can see what they look like? We can give better advice if we can see what the problem actually is.

Auditoriums- if you are beyond the operating limits of your on board flash (about 10ft) then there just isn't enough light, unless you buy a powerful external flash.
Indoor sports- there seems to be a lot of light but in reality you will probably need to shoot at around ISO800, your camera only goes to ISO400 though. Plus, gym lights have a bad yellow cast, so you will need to adjust your white balance. The 8700's auto white balance was rated better than its competitors.

My tips would be to set your camera on Aperture Priority, then set the f/# on the lowest it can go. Then put the ISO up to 400. You will probably have some noise will have to deal with. Also, try shooting in RAW. If have to post process, you most likely will, then shooting RAW will be help manipulate the white balance and pulling details from shadows.

You camera will take wonderful pictures, but when you are reaching it's technical limits understanding the use of WB, aperture, shutter speed and ISO will help push the camera to its maximum capabilities.

DH made a comment this is one time my big mouth may come in handy LOL!! LOL! I'm not going to rant on about cameras, forgot that Panasonic that took nice HD videos. The Sx IS series wasn't quite what I wanted as a backup camera, but I did like the tilt screen and got some decent photos before I gave it away. It does take really nice macros. At the tele end, all I could see was a huge blur and the way you control the zoom, it took too long to get my subject in the viewfinder. I went for it because of the 12X zoom. But to be fair, I have a nice telephone lens. It is tricky to use on moving subjects.

How beautiful! I had a Hindu Rope many years ago. I wound up giving it to a relative, who kept it in a garden window for several years. That hoya wouldn't grow to save its soul. Not one leaf. One day last year I saw it in my relative's window, I picked it up, and noticed it was infested with mealy bugs! I picked each one off, and gave it a good watering. Thank you very much! Somehow I got this thing working again. Several weeks ago, I had bought a card reader,(for a ridiculous amount of money) in a local drug store. Didn't work. Then I bought a reader from some outfit called Geeks.com, for a few bucks (with free shipping) This one could take 4 different cards. Seems I couldn't get this one to work either, until I plugged the cazmera in again. Then it worked, and the screen doesn't disappear anymore. I have no idea how this worked; I am a complete computer illiterate, but Thank you, thank you. Regards, John
