sealing honed marble

I searched for this topic and couldn't find an answer.

I just got my honed marble counter tops installed and I want to seal them. Is 511 the same as porous plus? and there are different types? ack! I'm so confused. y'all steered me to getting my counters honed and I couldn't be happier!

What did y'all use?

I've read here that using Porous Plus is overkill, but a lot of people do it anyway. I'm still trying to decide what to do with ours. The basic impregnator is a lot cheaper and is said to do the job just fine.

I'm obviously no help with your question, but I wanted to tell you that I think your kitchen is absolutely sweet! I love everything you've done so far. Tiny kitchens have their limitations in function sometimes, but I am always attracted to them in pictures because they're so darn cute! I think about the tiny kitchen we had in our first apartment - a 1920s 4-plex - and it was SO adorable. It had original cabinetry, a cute little recessed spice cupboard, and a Chambers range. I had no idea at the time how great it was. Anyway, kudos to you for creating such an adorable AND functional space! :o)

What kind of marble do you have? I just reserved two gorgeous slabs of 4cm Carrara. Nothin like it, huh?!

I just wanted to follow up on the countertop I chose. I loved the look of shiny white marble but knew that our family would ruin it. I ordered a sample of okite, as I mentioned above, and the veining was very green. I happened to see another sample at Ikea that had no green veining. I asked whether I could see a full slab and they told me the name of the company that supplied Ikea's product. I went to their plant and asked to see the slabs. For some reason, they did not want to show quartzite slabs, but only wanted to show granite slabs. It must have something to do with the commission. When I insisted, they let me see the slabs. Some had green veining, some had a lot of black veining but some had a very white background and a small amount of black veining, just like marble. I chose the slab and they were installed about 9 months ago. I LOVE THEM. They are stain-proof, etch-proof and beautiful. The veining does not look as authentic as marble, but it is close enough for me. rubyvine, before I sealed my honed marble, it was indeed like a sponge ... water soaked right in! I sealed it myself with 511 Impregnator available from Home Depot ... easy process: spray on, rub in and wipe excess off. Now water and other liquids stay on the surface. I've spilled all kinds of stuff on it: coffee, tomato sauce, soy sauce ... some of the drips sat overnight ... and no stains. I can't urge you strongly enough to get a good sized sample of the honed marble, seal it and then abuse it. Drip some lemon juice on it so that you'll know what etching looks like and whether or not you can tolerate it. Good luck! Erika

First of all, Happy Thanksgiving to all! The crooked sink was fixed but now there's a real problem. The day after I resealed the marble with 511, a large discoloration developed. I'm hoping you knowledgeable gardenwebbers can take a look and tell me what you think: I called 511 and the guy I spoke with said the color change could possibly be the result of a reaction of the 511 with the previous sealer. He recommended that I wipe the stone with mineral spirits to clean up any excess sealer, then try liquid poultice. I tried the mineral spirits and there was no improvement. Haven't gotten to the liquid poultice yet. And here's the peculiar thing: there are 3 pieces of marble in the kitchen; all 3 were sealed and resealed in the exact same way, but only this piece developed a problem. Why would that happen? I'm going to call the fabricator tomorrow, if he's even reachable. Meanwhile, all ideas appreciated.

Help Me Select Bathroom Tile

I am just starting the task of redoing our hallway bathroom which serves a guest room and would serve an additional bedroom if that room was not being used as an exercise room. I went out to look at tile the other day. Have not looked at tile for years so was unprepared for the vast number of choices out there. How well do the patterns of honed marble made up of many small pieces hold up? They are lovely to be sure but I was left wondering about all that grout to seal/clean and how often you need to seal the honed marble to keep it looking nice. There were also many small glass tile patterns that which made me wonder similar questions. Our house was built in 1903. The tub/shower in this room has a window in it measuring 27 wide by 36 tall. Right now there are 1 foot size tiles in that area. The present tile is a sore point as I have never liked it. There is a complicated story behind how we ended up with it but i won't bore you with it. We still love the kitchen we designed and built with the kind guidance of Gardenweb so hoping for similar results with this bathroom redo. Thank you, Michele D.

I found a remnant of carrara. Since my kitchen is only 80sq ft and marble has been my dream counter top I went for it.
I just love it!

I am so glad I did it. I am not a huge fan of granite.

Thanks Worldmom- yup she is tiny! my house is only 725 total sqft. but I took down a wall to get an island. I cant wait until it is complete. The dishwasher is an addition and I am super excited to get one of those.

The island has been a lifesaver. before that there was no place to put down groceries or fold my clothes, the W/D is right next to the sink. It was a challenge on a tiny budget but I am very happy with the results thus far.

Miracle is the company, 511 Porous Plus is the best sealer, there are others in the sealer line that also start with "511" (e.g. 511 Impregnator). I used Porous PLus. I figured, I spent all this cash on the counter, what's an additional $50 more than the cheapo stuff for a really GREAT sealer. I have been VERY happy with it....

2 1/2 years with porus plus 511 - resealed every 6 months - for the reseal, just wipe on wipe off , NO stains at all.

Another Porus Plus 511 here. I'm like staceyneil--even though I saw where it was supposed to be overkill, I figured it was worth the little extra.

Where can I buy it? I went to Home Depot and they had nothing. None of the 511 products, hadn't even heard of it. Online I suppose?

Alison, I just had marble put in on Friday. I didn't see any of the 511 sealer at the Lowe's on JI, so I'm ordering mine from Amazon.

Porous Plus 511 - either buy it from your fabricator or buy it on line. I bought a small bottle from the fabrictor, and 2 1/2 years later I still have plenty. I reseal about every 6 months or so. I have no stains at all.

Stone Tech is the other one used for marble and that seems to do very well. That's what mine is -- 3 years and counting with no problems. I don't have a bottle to give you the exact name and I'm afraid the last time I saw Bill V mention them both may have run off the board by now, but I think it is a pro line impregnating sealer. Shouldn't be hard to figure out. Mt fabricator left a less than full 16 oz water bottle for touch up and resealing and I haven't used it all yet.

Is the sealer a problem, for people more sensitive to some chemicals? I'd love to get marble, but that's been one of my big concerns.

HSW..I ended up buying mine online too. How is your marble??

I just sealed mine today. I had a spot that needed to dry out before I could seal. It seemed easy enough.

It does have a bit of a smell, but not sure about people super sensitive to chemicals.
