yes it should be stored on the internal memory of the device, are you sure you had done that moved it to the device and were not somehow viewing it from the stored website copy? I do not have a fire but my android tablets with kindle app allow me to sync and then choose to download to the device.

I don't know what I do. I tell Amazon to download it to my Kindle. When I open the KF it starts downloading them, at least it looks like it. It's also on my phone, but I don't have unlimited data time, so, since it looks like I have to have wi-fi, I didn't want to use all my time or go over at a big expense. I just went to my kindle for pc and downloaded them all to the computer. It shows that everything is downloaded to the device/kindle, but I have no clue. I just turned off wi-fi (I have it at home) so we will see what happens. It just seems like I should be able to read where ever I am after I tell Amazon to download to my KF. Once I download it it should be there with out the wi-fi next time. Guess I will be doing some more reading.

You are right you should not have to have wifi, you should have it on the actual device and be able to read it anywhere. Once you have them on your computer you should be able to go to sync on the actual devices and it should sync it with the pc as long as you are on and connected on both.
You can also select on Amazon to which device you want to send to but every book is saved to your amazon library and can be accessed from there.

I have the KF, the pc, the iPhone, and DH's iPad all on the account. I only downloaded one to the iPad, by accident, but it doesn't matter, he's downloade a couple of civil war books to the iPad, everything else gets downloaded to the KF. I don't know what I'm doing wrong. I haven't had time to do any reading. I posted my question just before leaving for a dr appt. Then responded to you right before I started dinner. And I don't know how much I will understand reading about it tonight, as I am ready to fall asleep at 7:50 already!! After messing around earlier, I'll try turning off the wi-fi on the KF and try to read it without again, see what happens, IF I can stay awake! If not, I'll try tomorrow. I'm taking my aunt for her eye appt.

I have a Kindle 2nd Generation, Kindle newest Generation, and a Kindle Fire. With the Kindle Fire, I am pretty sure the default view with the books is what's in your Cloud (all of the books you've purchased [either free or for a cost]). You can change to see just what's on Fire by looking at the books on your "Device."

Go to the Home View. Now tap where it says Books. Near the top center of the screen you will see the words "Cloud" and "Device." Whichever is highlighted (should be shown in orange) is what you're seeing. So, if "Cloud" is the active view, touch where it says "Device" and then it will shown you which books have been downloaded to your Kindle Fire.

When you are in the Cloud view, you will notice a difference on the covers of the books that have been downloaded and those that haven't. The books that are only in the Cloud will have a small gray circle in the lower right-hand corner, and inside the circle is a downward-pointing white arrow. That indicates that you still need to download the book to your Fire. Touch on that arrow, and the download will begin.

Once you have downloaded a book onto your Fire, you won't need to be in a wireless hotspot in order to read the book.

Lindsey, that's what I did. I had it set for Device. I have been on the computer this whole time, and haven't even picked it up. I still have to make DH's lunch for tomorrow, too. I think my ADD has kicked in! I have clicked on the grey arrow for all of them.

Maybe it was because I hadn't switched back and forth between cloud and device before I tried reading it? I think it was on device when I downloaded them, not cloud. Should I have changed it to cloud, then back to device to make it work?

I don't know if this will help you or not Tami, but I send books to my KF from Amazon, then I have to turn on the KF then find the book and touch it to make it start downloading.

After I watch it download then I can read it anywhere. I was used to my other kindle just having the book show up when I bought it but we were camping when I learned I had to download the book using wifi on the Fire. We drove out of the campground and into the next town to find a free wifi and download my book. We went back to the campground (no wifi) and I was able to read the complete book there.

Tap on your book and see if it starts to download. HTH :)

Having it set for Device is just the setting for when you're viewing it right then. It's not the setting for where the books will go when you buy them. (And when I say "buy," it includes books that are free.)

Also, you said you "have clicked on the grey arrow for all of them." Did you click on those arrows one right after the other? Or did you wait until one book finished downloading before clicking the arrow for another book? It makes sense that you should just be able to "click away to your heart's content," because, after all, when I buy a bunch of books to be downloaded to my newest generation Kindle they just queue up until they're all eventually downloaded. But, if you have been clicking a bunch of them one right after the other, maybe you should try just clicking on one and then waiting until the download completes before starting another.

OK, I just went to Amazon and "purchased" a free book. I chose to have it downloaded to my Kindle Fire. I've got the device sitting on the desk just to the left of my keyboard, and it's turned on, and the wireless is on. When I buy books and choose to have them download to either my newest Kindle or the 2nd Gen Kindle, they download immediately. But I've sat here for over 5 minutes and nothing has downloaded. So, I went to the Settings menu (the starburst looking thing to the left of the wireless icon at the top right of the screen), and tapped on Sync and the book immediately downloaded.

But, here's what you can do if you've downloaded all of your books to your computer. Connect the Fire to your computer with the USB cable -- it needs the regular size USB connector on one end to connect to your computer, and the mini USB connector on the other end to connect to the Fire. Follow the instructions on the screen to "disconnect the device" from your computer, but do NOT physically remove the USB cable. The Kindle will be shown in your computer's drive listings as a removable device, but it should show the word "Kindle." Find the books on your computer (hopefully you remember which folder you put them in when you downloaded them), highlight all of them and then copy them to the Books folder on the "Kindle drive."

Lindsey, it just says download interupted, evey time I try to open it with the wi-fi off. I connected the two and synced. I waited until each book finished downloading before I started downloading the next.

If I select and copy them, am I doing it from my kindle for pc, with that open? That's where they are. Would they be anywhere else? Can you tell I'm getting frustrated?
