Somewhere around 30 years ago (when solar pathlights were really, really new) I got an elcheapo set of four all-in-one units; came with a one year guarantee. They lasted about 25 years, and then I discovered no one makes the replacement batteries. So I finally replaced those with a pair that run off a separate battery/PV unit, aimed at the back steps. Points to consider: Price means almost nothing -- you are paying for the frame not the lighting (If you want stainless steel expect to pay $$$, plastic lamps are ¢). But LEDs and the PV panel are very old-hat, there is no excuse for non-functioning. Count the number of LED bulbs in each unit; 6 will give the effect of very bright moonlight from 6 feet away, while 3 will barely show the path 18" away. IMO, those with a separate PV panel do a better job of battery-charging because you have more options for optimum replacement (and those panels have been around for decades and are nearly trouble-free). Look at the estimated length of time lit because that is best guess -- reality will depend on how much sun the PV receives and how good the batteries are. However, my backstep light (6 LED; one of a pair of units) does stay bright for the full 12 hours, the PV panel gets about ¾ day of sunlight. Most units come with a warranty or guarantee, if there's no warranty, no sale. The only upkeep is monthly, to wipe the face of the PV panel to remove pollution. Thank you everyone. I do not have a photo. But looking at the photo that is posted, mine looks nothing like that. It is in deep shade, with just just some dappled sunlight. But it is all blue. Not a bit of variegation at all, and my plant looks bigger than the one in the photo. :( But I will be patient. I just don't want to wait years to find out I have the wrong plant. And it was the hosta I couldn't live without this year, and I don't think I have it. Though I have got a lot of other beautiful ones.

What you suggest I have done many times and is on the right track. Check sites like Lightolier and Halo for ideas and examples. Go to their recessed lighting sections.

What ever you do, do not us irrigation wire nuts. Don't know where you are located but if you are near a large city or in one there should be a Ewing Irrigation Store close. Ewing1.com. They sell 3-M DBRY splice kits meant for higher amps than irrigation connectors. You have less than 50 watts on your 12/2 wire now and you are talking about adding another 15 watts for a total of less than 70 watts... ... ... not an issue what so ever unless you are planning on running those two lights over to your neighbors yard or you live on 10 or more acres and want to put them at the top of your driveway. Is your transformer multi-tap? If so put the 12/2 on the 15 volt tap that way you will have enough oomph to drive the last LED. The industry standard for 12 volt LEDs is an operating range of 9 to 15 volts. Less than 9 volts and the LED will not come on, more than 15 volts and you will burn out the circuit that drives the LED. As always take any advise with a grain of salt and read the instructions that came with the light fixtures and through the salt over your left shoulder. Hope that helps.
