I need some major help making a kitty decision (sorry so long!)
Comments (14)Cat mom and all, no one's saying the cat WOULD become a biter but only there is a real RISK of aggression problems or other personality changes. Is it worth the risk when there may be options with a more certain or sure outcome? The point is you shouldnt think of it as a "last resort," because there is a real chance it would NOT solve the problem. How I manage a similar situation is to do sort of a time share - my old 20 yr old cat stays in the bedroom 8 am - 8 pm, then gets the run of the house 8 pm- 8 am when I put the new cats downstairs in the basement (there's couches and stuff downthere and I feed them when they go downstairs so they have pleasant associations. What makes this work is that its so highly routine - cats just LOVE routine and predicatability, same things happening at the same time each day. What was NOT working was just trying to keep them separate in random, unpredictable ways. Everyone has settled down knowing they each have their own space and own times for occupying the "common area." In the wild, cats often make these same types of arrangments to "time-share" an area. If youre not up for that.... do consider finding another home. Ive done it many times, found home for cat in an unfortunate situation. There is a way of screening people and making sure its a good home - I could tell you more if you want. There's always the long difficult process of getting cats used to each others smell, and build up their tolerance for each other. But Im thinking because the ragdolls are so passive and unable to defend themselves (are they? Ive never had one) that might actually be triggering the other cat's dominance and urge to drive them out of the territory. Nature and feline territorial behavior is not pretty sometimes. In my case I decided I just could NOT put my old 20 yr old cat, deaf and arthritic, through the attacks she was getting from the 1 young new cat I brought into the house. She could not defend herself and she was literally getting knocked down, clawed, bitten and terrorized and she started peeing out of the box she was so freaked out. Now, Im happy to report, she is feeling secure again and her old self....See MoreSo Many Decisions - Countertop colors and cabinet colors
Comments (11)It is confusing to set up a new kitchen because of all the choices and all the different but equally beautiful outcomes. Take the time-it may be many months-to get a vision that feels right. Start by looking at lots of pictures of different kitchen-there's a bunch at houzz.com and http://finishedkitchens.blogspot.com/. Save the ones you both like and would coordinate with the rest of your house's style (modern, traditional, etc.) I wouldn't worry about coordinating with colors in the living room-at least not yet. Set those saved kitchen pics aside for a couple of weeks and look at them again. Don't be surprised if some of the pics no longer thrill you. Take a better look at the kitchens that made the cut. What do they have in common? Are they all bright and cheery? Or maybe dark and rich in deep tones? Do you find yourself drawn to the graining of wood or to the uniform surface of paint? Uniform counter surface or lots of movement? At this point, you'll probably have narrowed it to a handful of choices. Not too bad. So, layout is next. The room will dictate most of that. Your budget will also influence the layout-changing plumbing and electric locations cost more money. The folks here are very good at pinpointing pitfalls of designs and reworking them into something more functional. With layout completed, time to pick the cabinets and granite. I think most folks pick out the cabinet color first since it occupies the vertical surfaces and dominates the room. Then take a sample of the cabinet color with you to select the granite. Note: there will be stunning graintes that you just love but won't look great with your cabinet. Keep looking-you'll know it when you find "the stone". Do keep an open mind-don't shop with a list of names since they vary from yard to yard. Take pictures to help remember, but realize that colors may not photograph "true." A few caveats. Do determine a budget ahead of time and try to stick to it. It's real easy for a more modest remodel to snowball into a total gut job. Don't be persuaded into buying gadgets/appliances you don't need. Do consider the impact of your choices on resale value. Are you willing to decrease resale potential to go with unpopular choices (like black counters with black cabinets)? Even if you have no plans to sell, life throws curveballs. There have been many posts here of "forever" homes being sold within 5 yrs of remodeling. However, it is your kitchen; in the end, it's your preferences that count....See MoreSo many decisions and we just started!
Comments (14)Thanks for the input. I lucked and found someone who built our floorplan. She said it doesn't get cold in the shower as long as all the doors are shut in the bathroom, but water does splash outside the shower unless the showerhead is pointed to the back corner. I'm going to see if we can move the head a bit or just put a door on the shower. I decided on the brick. I really wanted the stucco, but I couldn't find a good paint/stone combo. No one else seems to that has this elevation either by the looks of the neighbors. I know if it looks horrible I would be miserable and find a reason to move. I found a brick and stone mix on someone else's house, which is great since I'm usually not a fan of them together. It's nice. I don't love it, but I'm noticing I just don't care for almost all of the exteriors being built around here lately. The only exterior I liked was on a house twice the price of mine! So, what I picked will work and I'm relieved I know what I'm getting when it's built....See MoreHow do you make appliance decisions when there's so many bad reviews?
Comments (18)Thank you all so much for the really excellent advice. Each of these comments is extremely helpful to me. I can't tell you how much better of a mindset I have about the whole thing. A combination of people understanding how it can become overwhelming - if you let it - but also learning how to set some logical criteria for making a decision (such as features, price, warranties, using psychology & a pinch of salt with reviews, strongly considering the customer service of the company, deciding what your priorities are and keeping your sanity are some ) has helped me a LOT to get a grip on this endeavor. :D Finally to understand that nothing's perfect but narrowing the margins can give you a pretty good shot at succeeding. If you've found some place with pretty good customer service you've got that as a fall back. Getting that this is NOT an investment but an expense also changes my point of view and understanding about it. (Ugh, marketing ploys. It's always like they are doing you a favor and not just trying to get your money). There's a lot more that you've explained here but I just really wanted to thank you and say it's made a massive difference to my whole outlook and feelings about it. I was able to make a decision this morning that I feel good about and feel a bit like having a glass of wine and some cheesecake - that's how relaxed I feel about it! c: Quite a difference from the semi-hysterical exhausted fearful creature I was, haha. Cheers everyone. ^^...See MoreRelated Professionals
