Cream or Powder for a Diaper Change?
Comments (9)The issue with powder is that some contain 'talc'..Anything with talc shouldn't be used because of potential lung damage. And as some folks have said, the only real reason to use powder would be to avert heat rash, on other parts of the body. I've also heard a doctor say that talc used in the genital area of females (infant or grown) MIGHT be connected with ovarian cancer (particles work their way up, causing chronic irritation). He cited some study, but I've not heard anything about that since...Personally, I think soap and water on a daily basis is enough for most... I really don't see any need to use powder on a bottom, unless it's a medicated one for a yeast-type rash (and that wouldn't be OTC). My rule of thumb with a behind is, know your child's skin. Some babies have ultrasenstive skin and have to have a moisture barrier every diaper change or their skin breaks down (my dd). But my son seems to have tougher skin, and most of the time, cleaning it is sufficient. And whatever goop you use on the bottom, avoid types that are perfumed as the base of the fragrance most-times is alcohol (which can rip delicate skin). Same goes for the wipes and diapers. Less is better. One more thing about using powder and goop together..I wouldn't recommend it. I work in a hospital and have seen this as a setup for yeast/bacterial growth. Whatever is used on the skin needs to be completely removed each time. If you like the fragrance, use a lotion on the other parts of the body......See MoreDiaper Champ or Diaper Genie II
Comments (8)If you are breastfeeding, you will not need anything special for diaper disposal as a breastfed baby's diapers do not smell. DD uses a garbage can. I suggest that you will need a crib and a chest of drawers. A changing table is not a necessity. I used a water proof pad I would put under the baby on his bed to do a diaper change, and DD is doing the same, only she is using a disposable water proof pad for less laundry. She buys them at the drug store. It is easy to manage without the changing table. I suggest that you get lots of blankets, sheets, water proof mattress pads and newborn to 3 months onesies with feet and gowns so that you will not have to do laundry too often. You will be doing laundry enough! If you live where winters are cold, buy 6 or so baby undershirts. I like bumpers in a crib too. I like that large sponge pillow to lay the baby on for baths. They cost just a few dollars. Helps you manage their slippery bodies as you learn to bathe them. I do like those baby towels with the triangle of terrycloth at one corner to pull over their heads so you can wrap them warmly after their baths. Get some baby shampoo too and a mild bath soap. I like to make baby washcloths for baths from a little square of cotton flannel. If you have a friend or relative who sews, or you do yourself, ask for a few of them. Also buy a dozen cloth diapers to use as burp cloths. You will go through these quickly. Target sells printed cloth diapers that are cute in packages of all pinks or all blues. You could also ask your crafty friends to crochet or sew some edges on them. Get some Original Desetin for any bad diaper rashes that may develop. You want to get on a rash right away if it develops. You could also have another type of diaper rash cream to use if the rash is milder. Have some kind of wipes to take with you in your diaper bag as well as at home. Keep a receiving blanket in your diaper bag to use under the baby if you have to change him or her in a public place. Of course you want a nice stroller and a car seat. If you will be traveling, Graco's Snap and Go is great--it's a stroller and a car seat all in one. If you will breastfeed, an electric pump would be great. I never had one, but a friend gave DD hers, and it does a great job of offering the mother options. We love the Bumbo seat, which you can use with supervision once the baby can hold up its head well. DGS loves his. DD also valued her Bjorn baby carrier and would even use it around the house if she had lots to do and the baby was fussing for attention. Also great for getting around the big city with a new baby. Hope this helps. Warmest congratulations....See More'Sunburn' diaper rash
Comments (11)My son has a similar rash from time to time. Now that he's a little older, he'll communicate that he has a "boo boo" on his tooshie. When this happens, instead of irritating it and using diaper wipes, I'll give him a bath with a little baking soda in the water. After the bath, we found a product called Bordeaux's Butt Paste, we slather that on and add a little baby power on top of that, and amazingly the rash will diappear within the next couple of diaper changes. I have tried to track exactly what's causing the rash and it seems to appear when he drinks fruit juices. He doesn't seem to have any issues wuth fresh fruit, so I know it must be something that's being added to the juice....See MoreRash around mouth--red cheeks???
Comments (5)Does she have a cold or anything? Our son recently started getting cold sores and they can be little bumps in cluster type things for a while. I have been getting them for about 5 years and was very careful to not pass them to our son when I had them but he got them from a cold. The first time I had them, I got about 4 or 5. They don't hurt all the time, only during certain stages so maybe they aren't bothering your daughter now. Does she eat table foods? Shane points his out to me when he's eating certain things, something salty or hot (temp). How long has she had these? If they're cold sores, the blister things will pop and there will be a sort of clear liquid in there and then they're start to dry up and go away but they take time if you don't use something on them. They also tend to look white before they pop. I put some Camphofenique gel on mine and Shane's and they go away pretty fast. He understands that the medicine makes it go away and deals with it. Good luck! Hope it's not cold sores and it's something else! ~Leslie~...See Morerunsnwalken
