I have a similar system as hockeymom and lisa . . . I bought pegboard and the uprights separately. The only thing I don't like is that the uprights ar little sharp on the edges and I occasionally scrape a knuckle. Next kitchen I'll track down the dowels or go for the Ikea lifters, which I think are neat. My drawer is a 36" pots and pans drawer and it works great. I do, however, keep my glassware in an upper cabinet.

I'm SO EXCITED your kitchen remodel is finally going to happen!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You've gotten so many responses and good tips, that I was only able to skim through. I love our kitchen dish drawers, but we cheated a bit. Our dish area has a hutch sitting on the counter above the dish drawers. It's mostly full of glasses, cups, serving bowls, and pitchers, but has drawers across the bottom for flatware. This means that the top drawer in the base cabinet, that might usually hold flatware, is free for dishes, like custard cups, etc. Our plates (dinner and salad/dessert sizes) and cereal bowls are in the 2nd drawer from the top (the first deep one), and we have Tupperware type containers in the bottom drawer. (In the pics in the link below we still had some serveware in the bottom drawers, but now it's plastic containers in one and lids in the other.) I wouldn't want to have everyday-use dishes in the bottom drawer. We had 46" for the dish storage, so we did 2 cabinets each at 23" wide. I expected to have to use some sort of pegboard system or the Ikea plate holders in our drawers, but decided to try Cushy Cupboard liner first after reading about it on this forum. For two years that's all we've been using. Occasionally we have minor shifting after vigorous drawer pulling or closing by DH & DS, but the dishes have never crashed together. I'm very pleased with Cushy Cupboard. I had to order it online & have never seen it in a store. It's more expensive than other shelf liners but it really gets the job done. However, you do not want to use it where there is any proximity to heat, a hot utensil, or leaking cans.

I asked this type of question a few months back. In the end, we opted to stay with a 3-drawer stack. My current dishes would fit fine in a 4-drawer stack, but if we were to change plates (which we are doing after having my Pfaltzgraff for 20-ish years), it might be an issue. My Pfatzgraff plates are rather flat, but some of the plates I've looked at have more of an upward slope. So, we stuck with the 3-drawer. Also, it turned out that I preferred the look of the 3-drawer unit where it was located...the 4-drawer mock up looked "busy" and we were trying to keep clean lines through the kitchen. For some reason, I've found that a 4-drawer unit looks "better" to me when it's a narrower cabinet (24" or less). Our dish drawer is 36" and I just didn't like the look of it as a 4-drawer. So, my decision was made partially on aesthetics. Having said that, you could go to a 4-drawer and even if your plates are going to stack higher, you could have the plates in 2 separate stacks and use a 2nd drawer if needed.
