Peel Stop - Finish Coats

Hi,

I am priming with Peel Stop (Gardz in some other areas with bare drywall). How long before I must put the finish coat of paint on? I note the Peel Stop documentation says it cures in 7-10 days. Does that mean I have to get my finish coat on within 7 days? Otherwise adhesion problems?

I forget what day I started! I'm sure it is less than a week at this point.

Don't know why you would be using peel stop but you can put the finish coat on either one in a couple hours , under normal conditions

My problem is delay not dry time. Primers (even paint, I think) have a specific time period within which you have to get your finish coat on for proper adhesion. Kilz Original is 30 days. I just read some can be as little as two days. All I know is it says 7-10 days to cure.

Wow, that is a stumper then. I really have no other suggestions. Myself, I'd be leery of putting poly over it to hold it down, I'd be thinking the poly would lift up too, or crack and craze? Dunno. Had a similar experience recently. Freebie little lamp I got, perfect shape for a bedside but it was black and I wanted it cream. Did everything right and there was one tiny spot that the primer and paint just kept curling up and cracking off of and I just can not get it fixed. Guess you could always try the poly, if you can get the topcoat to cling long enough to apply it?

Well, I talked with tech support and he says Gardz isn't really designed for flaking, peeling paint, although it will do something. The can kind of reads that it is but the wording of Peel Stop is very specific for peeling and flaking paint. He says it's like glue in a can and will work better than Gardz. Neither product can penetrate all the way through, however, and lock it all down to the drywall for a fail-safe finish. It just glues down edges and areas that have tiny breaks in the finish going on. Gardz states it is moisture resistant and they did say it would work well for the area over the tub for splashing, steam, etc. Whereas, Peel Stop breathes and is not moisture resistant. FYI. A lot of people recommend Gardz for the paint peeling problem. Peel Stop is what's designed for that.

Orange peel ceiling finish?

When we were house shopping I saw one that had orange peel walls and ceilings. (built maybe 2004). I didn't like it, I felt like I was in some sort of dome because it was exactly the same. But thats my opinion. It didn't help that the walls and ceiling were the same color, off-white. The living area had crown molding, it helped break it up a bit, if that makes sense. I think if you have orange peel on your walls and ceiling, if you put crown molding up, keep the ceilings (flat based) white and have some color to your walls, it would look really nice. If you could get a 'finer' orange peel on your ceiling that would be even better. Its also how much money you want to put into it. Smooth ceilings will cost so much more. Would you want to do crown molding? I'm guessing orange peel ceilings and crown molding could cost significantly less than smooth ceilings : ).

Your plaster is shot. You will need to refinish the pool interior surface. It looks like from your picture that there is a high build paint over the concrete substrate and that is what is peeling. Does the delaminated layer feel like concrete or paint? It could be plaster and not paint, though it is too thin at 1/4" as pictured, but either way everything that is delaminated must be removed completely before you refinish the interior surface with paint or plaster. You may need to look into a sandblasting to make sure you get it all off. Try not to put off this repair as this will only serve to weaken the substrate further. It is likely, assuming no additional leak areas, that your pool is leaking through the structure and that is why you are losing water. You need to pressure test your system and have the interior surface redone at minimum.

You know this is just one of those things to write on a can of primer so that when their product fails, they can blame you for not applying the topcoats fast enough. I have never in my 30 years of painting had an issue with paint or primer failing because I waited too long to put the topcoat on. Sure, it is best to always follow manufacturer recommendations, but this is a perfect example of what do you do when the manufacturer recommends nothing? It's a clear sign that this probably just isn't all that critical of an issue. What I always do though if I can't get back to apply the topcoats in a timely manner (within two weeks or so) I will sand the primer just to help that paint stick better in case there is anything there that has collected on the primer that would impede that adhesion. Enjoy your Christmas and don't stress out too much about this.

I totally agree, why don't they just put it on the can since 'they' claim there is a period of time for getting your finish on.

Thanks, I will try to relax. I hate rework! lol
