What color appliances in shore house kitchen??

We are renovating a beach house. I am really having trouble picturing the appliances in place, specifically what color would look best.

The cabinets are a simple white maple, and we plan on doing Silestone counters in possibly Diana Pearl, which is a sandy/tan speckle color. The floors will be hardwood oak (still to be picked).

I have looked at a lot of magazines and all through the FKB site to see photos of similar kitchens. It seems like every single photo I see has big stainless appliances.

Since this is a vacation home, I do not want to spend huge dollars on appliances, particularly the range. So I am not looking for a big professional stove or fridge, etc.

It seems like my choices are limited to black or white for the DW, fridge, range and micro over the range. My dilemma is:

1. It feels like black appliances will not look right in a sunny, beachy, casual-coastal feel kitchen.

2. I cannot picture a big white fridge or stove in there either, as that seems to look dated to me. Plus it's a lot of white next to the white cabinets.

I have seen some stoves that are black and stainless, but the stainless looks more like stainless "paint" to me. I think that might look tacky or fake.

Does anybody have an opinion on what color appliances would look best?

White appliances would seem perfect for a beach/vacation scene.

Sand blows or gets dragged in, is all over the place, and looks lousy on black surfaces. Fingerprints on stainless would not be an activity I'd want to spend time on in a vacation house. White for all of the appliances would be my choice for ease of maintenance and good clean looks.

I had a similar dilemma - lake house vs. beach house though and we were just doing some minor updates - counters, appliances, ceiling - keeping cabinets and floor. I have light oak cabinets and oak floor and prefer ivory shades of things vs. white. So white appliances didn't work and black seemed so big and black and stainless seemed so big and industrial. In the end I went with stainless - DH wanted a stainless range. We kept our old black dishwasher (actually upgraded to the old dishwasher from our kitchen at home). So I picked microwave and fridge that had as much black trim as possible - to tone down the silver. The range is pretty much stainless. If almond were still readily available I probably would have gotten that - if DH hadn't been rather stuck on the stainless range idea.

We've had white for 15 years, replaced a DW about 5 years ago and stuck with white. Recently bought a white fridge to replace our almost 20 year old fridge. Then I started appliance shopping for new oven, MW, cooktop, etc - and hit road blocks. I like white but what I don't like is the limited selection of white appliances. I didn't want the upkeep of SS nor did I want to pay the extra mark-up but now I'm wishing I'd gone that route so that my appliance color isn't such a constricting factor in my appliance selection. I know people paint older appliances. Would it be insane to paint an almost new fridge to look SS? Or should I just get over the fact that I might end up with mis-matched appliances? If it matters, the fridge and wall oven won't be on the same wall. If it was just white and SS, it wouldn't bother me as much but so many of the SS wall ovens have lots of black on them and I think that will stick out like a sore thumb with my white appliances. I'm also planning to get a warming drawer. Since I want to panel it, the only choice is Dacor. I visit our salesman at the local appliance store regularly but so far, no decisions have been made and I'm so frustrated by the whole process!

I was recently looking at all those brands for my new home. I ended up going with a Viking D3 range, fridge and dishwasher. Partially for the rebates, partially for the matching and most of all because I loved the range. Great features and it is gorgeous. Beyond that the Viking D3 has a better warranty than the rest and I negotiated an extension to 5 years from the dealer for $175 for all 3 appliances. Also free delivery and install. The fridge is the same same as the jenn air and kitchenaid. Just different handles. The only iffy thing is the dishwasher. I am sure I could do better by buying a Bosch or Miele but with the 5 year warranty I think I am taking a safe risk on the Viking. Still need a range hood but I dont think I will go with Viking on that.

Get what makes you happy!!! So what if stainless has gone mass production. If you like it, you like it. 10 years ago one of my friends complemented my mother on her stainless oven...from 1965. It'll never completely go away. If you're more interested in the period look, or don't like the way the stainless looks with the stainless counter (and there are sevetyleven different colors of stainless), you can't go wrong with panels. But they do cost more. And it doesn't sound like you like them. That said, yes, you can paint custom panels. I've seen people do art on them. Chalkboard paint. Mirrors (the unbreakable steel kind). Faux fur zebra covered. So long as you don't add too much weight--I wouldn't do mosaic tiles--you can do just about anything with custom panels. There are companies that specialize in period panels for appliances. You can make your fridge look like an icebox. There are even fridges that are specifically made to look like and open like iceboxes, with the several doors. You can also panel dishwasher drawers to make them look like staples bins. Or just cabinets. You can panel anything except an oven. And there are even cabinets that can enclose ovens entirely for people who refuse to see them. The first appliances were cast iron ranges. There were wooden iceboxes--most of the ones I've seen have been oak. My father even remembers the iceman whose horse knew the route. After that things got very white enamel. Fancy ranges also came in colors, at least starting in the '20's. I don't really know before that. And there were even fancy ones like this that looks like a dresser (this is a favorite of mine): There are a whole heck of a lot of different things you can do to make a grown in place, or period look for your kitchen. But if you like stainless, just get it!!

@Jack Greene - A spread sheet is great. It will let you know how much extra it will cost if you go with the Wolf. Fisher and Paykel also make a 36 inch induction range. I don't know the quality of F&P, and don't know if the looks would go with your space, but it could be another option. Bosch double ovens retail from $2800 - $3200, with the Benchmark series running $4200. Of course, you have your discount so only you know the cost of the ovens. Then the cabinet and perhaps extra electrical for the double ovens come into play. In addition, there may be a functional advantage in your layout for a single range vs. double ovens. If needing help with kitchen layouts, there are some GREAT designers here that really provide the best functional space given your parameters. Some of them are better than kitchen designers homeowners have hired. I've seen them rescue some very bad plans before someone made a big mistake.

Our only home is at the beach and our appliances are white. We just upgraded from older, black appliances and painted the white cabinets a pale greyed teal. That seems to give some relief from the all white look. I agonized over not buying stainless appliances, but I read somewhere that white is coming back in style. And it does work for the beachy look, which is a special decor/look that lets one ignore trends to some extent IMHO.

Thanks for all your input. This site is so helpful! I really do not want to pay the premium for stainless appliances, so I suppose white is the way to go. I will need to inject some color in there though. (I liked the thread on jazzing up an all-white kitchen).

I am still open to other suggestions and opinions!

What about bisque??? I think they are beautiful...not quite as dark as the old almond from the 80's but not white either....actually probably closer to the color of sand, depending on where you beach is LOL.

I CAN picture white appliances in the kithcen with the white cabinets, sand Silestone, and floor. I love a beach home that is light and airy. My friend had a white kitchen at her beach house and it was gorgeous.

I remember when we moved our big SS fridge to its permanent kitchen space (previous one was white) just last year, and it looked odd. I got used to it real fast, and now it just fits in very well.

Ours is a lake house, and I wanted light and airy! The house we tore down to build this one was a dark cave, with dark 70s cabinets and I wanted to go as far from that as I could -- but didn't want stark white.

Our cabinets are cream with a gold glaze, and are not available now or we'd be putting them in the house we're just starting. Countertops are solid surface in a muted and matte blue, and walls are yellow. Love the look and how it functions. My appliances are bisque, basically the same color as the cabinets. Pictures are on the thread called "wood or painted" or something like that.

I know I'm way out of the norm here, but am not a fan of the stainless steel look. I'm sure many people here will find my kitchen very bland but I love it and that's what matters most!!

I think going with white will be fine but for a little fun maybe,buy an second or scratch and dent stove and paint it a color like teal or green, even orange. Hey go for it.

Why don't you just paint the walls a wonderful, tropical color? An ocean blue, lime green, coral, sunny yellow -- or all of the above - LOL. What a happy, summery counterpoint to all that white. And festive!
