Will BM Advance yellow?

Buying my cabinet paint tomorrow. For the dark color (BM Midsummer Night) I plan to use BM Advance, because of the super long dry times I had with my dark sample boards using the Ace paint. For the White (BM Simply white) I will either use Ace Cabinet paint or the BM Advance.

Couldn't get a straight answer from paint store if the white Advance will yellow. According to the paint store it is not a true hybrid so I am guessing it will yellow. Any input?

I wonder about sheen differences if I use two different brands, hmmm.

Yes it will though not nearly as much as a conventional alkyd. If a conventional alkyd yellowing were rated a 10 (worst) and a latex a 2 (it will yellow slightly), Advance would be a 4. Lack of exposure to light and exposure to ammonia will speed yellowing.

Obviously, the dark color yellowing is irrelevant...since it's dark!

Yes, "normal" hybrids, like ACE's, because there's SOME Alkyd-resins components, will yellow very slightly over time. But, as PG says, nothing like a straight Oil would!

When I show customers my sample-boards with the ACE Cab/door/trim paint (including some dark colors), they like it! I make sure they understand long curing/hardening times though...it's just the way it is with dark colors. Higher colorant loads prolong dry/cure times, especially when the paint has Alkyd components.

Come on Gurus! I read that on a scale of 1 to 10, conventional alkyd yellowing would rate a 10 and latex a 2. Advance would be a 4. Do you agree? I also read that Cabinet-Coat has a natural green tint, so the White Dove I want would be different in the CC compared to Advance. Do you agree? Does CC also yellow over time? I went to a different BM store (drove to next town over) to ask these questions. The guy was nice, and honest - he didn't have a clue. What do you recommend???

Kenzie you have the perfect kitchen for hand-painting kitchen cabinets. You are going to be amazed at the improvement if you follow Christopher's directions. Just don't skip any steps and take your time :). You will see a little grain since your cabinets are oak, but that helps eliminate the look of brush marks also. I am one of those people who don't mind seeing the grain of oak - at least they look like real wood. I have one question for Christoper: How does the BM Impervo and Advance compare to SW Pro-Classic as far as ease of applying?? My reason for asking is that I have used the Pro-Classic on a vanity and was very impressed with the quality of the finished product - just would like to know for future projects.

Nice job. I finished my cabinets with Advance also, they will tell you it takes 30 days to cure max hardness; that is true for all latex paints. Also used Advance on doors and paneling with Insl-x Stick primer which may be better for cabinets advised my BM dealer. Prime or not. Probably safer to prime, peace of mind. Write back in a few months, it seems that after a few months the Advance is very durable and no problems. As always, touching up may be necessary, after all it is just paint. We learned that after painting our floors; got rid of our old vinyl and carpet floors and painted 2 coats of SW Porch and floor over bare wood. Good enuf so far, not sure whether paint or polyurethane is better. So we are testing both on various floors. Edit: your room looks so much brighter with the new paint!

Personally, I would lightly sand, and reprime, because, I think you get a better finish, but, I know many, who do not prime, if they are using the same paint. You do need to sand a bit though, for the new paint to adhere to the old.

Not sure which brand I will choose for the white, but it is great to have the info I need now!

As for the dark color, I posted a while back about the long dry time with my super dark ACE paint. If I went with the Advance instead, would/should it cure faster or slower.
Confused now...
Situation is: painting cabinet boxes in place in a house with 2 kids ;) Time is of the essence, but a durable hard finish is also important. Hmmm.
Another bit of info is we are in the high desert, very dry/low humidity and cold outside temps.
Any advice on which product would work better?

You might be over-thinking this one a bit but to answer your question, full cure for both takes about a week or two. Dry to touch happens much quicker with a latex (30 minutes versus a few hours) but even the best latexes do not get as hard as an alkyd. If you are worried about yellowing in the white, just go latex all around - BM/Inslx makes several excellent satin/semi-gloss paints that will perform great on cabinets. The key is good surface prep to ensure the latex has a clean, well prepped surface that it can bite onto.
