The geography of rudeness vs. politeness

I don't want to hijack lilliepad's "Is it just me" thread, so I'm starting a new thread about rudeness. I noticed on her thread that many people encounter rudeness every day, while others have mostly polite interactions with strangers. Rather than asking if people are becoming more rude, I want to know: Do you think rudeness is based on geographic area?

I grew up in Pennsylvania and now live in Washington state. I am constantly amazed at how much nicer people are out here, compared to PA. Yes, of course there are polite people in PA, but here almost everyone is polite. Cashiers ask you how you're doing, others in line let you go ahead of them, drivers let you out in front of them, people hold doors open for each other.

So let's take a poll: Where do you live, and are most people rude or polite?
