closet or pantry cabinet?

I currently have a pantry closet, 24 inch wide and deep for most of it, angled back at the top so I have a little more storage at the top (not that I can reach it now). Im starting the layout process, and wondering if I should I get rid of the closet in favor of pantry cabinet, or keep the closet, get it redesigned with better organization, (pull out shelves, more shelves etc) and try to replace the door with something that would look better with a new kitchen. Ive not priced out either option, Im just wondering if it would look more cohesive to have the pantry cabinet, or is it silly to give up an actual closet when one already exists?

I tore out my closet pantry and am putting in a pantry cabinet - kitchen is still under construction - so I don't yet know how it his going to work out. There is no doubt it looks a million times nicer than the door and I think the pull outs will be nice, but I did used to store some things in my closet pantry that won't work in my cabinet probably, like brooms, a grocery bag storage things and a hook for aprons.

We decided to swap the fridge and the pantry - if we had not, the decision would have been a bit harder to rip something out to just replace it with an expensive cabinet....

Evaluate what you need to store and how accessible items would be in each situation. Look at hafele and rev-a-shelf websites which have many variations of
pullouts, organizers etc. I think Hafele may have a shelf which pulls out and down. Hafele manufactures most of the stuff cabinet makers utilize to "accessorize" their cabinets. You may find you can order the stuff on your own, design the closet to your specifications, and have your contractor install it. This is a less expensive option then buying a pantry from your kitchen guy.

We inherited a small pantry with bifold doors, and it works great. We have elfa shelving floor to ceiling and total flexibility because of the open space inside. In fact, in the upcoming remodel, we're converting the laundry room to a huge pantry room, with spare fridge and freezer, extra prep space, and wall-to-wall pantry space. I was going to put cabinets along that wall, but decided it made more sense to put 2 sets of double doors and elfa inside, just like our current pantry only much bigger. 10' of floor-to-ceiling pantry/storage shelving that I can close off ... can't wait!!!! One advantage of an open closet rather than cabinets is easy access to floor space. I use 40-lb buckets of grains, and can slide them in and out easily, directly on the floor. No lifting. :-)

Oops, sorry I missed that you had said something about the windows in your original post. Yes you really need prep area! You have a large kitchen but the way the sink and stove are in close proximity does you no favors. I like the idea of putting the cabinets floor-to-ceiling on the fridge wall with a double oven on that wall. Some people like to have a microwave in close proximity to their prep areas so they can melt butter etc. if you want it close to you I would be thinking of a microwave drawer if not I would put the microwave on the fridge wall too. Do you use the table in the breakfast nook or the table in the dining room more? Personally, I really like a separate dining room where people can sit and not see what's going on in the kitchen. I think if it was me I would run counter height cabinets along the window wall all the way across the kitchen and breakfast nook and have that entire stretch be workable countertop....and on top of that I would either have an island or additional pullout as shown in the ohtos above. In the dead corner of my kitchen I have a compost bucket called the solon. It is by blanco. I love that I can use it and it really seals in the odors. I still have an under counter trash pull out with two bins one for a dry recyclable and the other for dry non-recyclable. Solon is usually a fairly costly piece of kitchen equipment. I was able to buy mine at a discount from a woman who wanted to put it in a granite countertop her fabricator refused to attempt to cut a hole in the granite. I was using Corian and it was no issue to cut a hole in it. There are only two of us and I usually fill it up in a day. You may want to look at what it is and perhaps purchase it or something like it. Since you were going to be redoing the windows anyway… Is there any possibility that you could enlarge the kitchen sink windows (essentially add two additional windows one on each side of the existing) and then move the sink over towards where the table is currently and give yourself a lot more space between the sink and the stove? (And possibly countertop to the left as well.) Is the laundry in play too? It could make a walk in pantry.

I'd be curious whether you get more storage from a fold-out pantry like that, or from loading up your pantry with roll-out shelves. Looking at the overhead diagram on the catalog page above, it appears that you might end up wasting a bit of space to allow for necessary clearances for the different sections to fold-out. We have 5 roll-out shelves in our 36" wide pantry, which can hold an immense amount of stuff. I don't have pictures of ours, but here's a similar pantry elsewhere on Houzz.

Only you know what is valuable to have on hand, for you. How could anyone here advise you as to that? It sounds intriguing to consider living with very little. I have had the experience of spending time in a small rented space that had only the essentials, and coming away from that time with a new understanding of how little we really need. Really, though, only you can make that decision and your priorities will probably make themselves clear as you experience living in your tiny house and as you define your lifestyle. Don't worry much on it. Things can always be rearranged, eliminated, or added as you see fit. It there is a hurricane of any magnitude coming your way you would be advised employ the "vehicle" part of your RV to get out of the way of the hurricane. It does make good sense for all of us to keep some emergency items ready to be picked up and taken no matter if you live in S Dakota or south Florida.

We opted for a walk in pantry closet rather than a cabinet. The cabinet looks nice, but for us the closet is a million times more functional in terms of both access and storage.

We ripped out our closet and put in pantry with roll out shelves. We also relocated the fridge in that spot.

I hated the closet. Besides the fact that nobody seemed to have the ability to close the doors, I was always looking at a mess because the thing was just so disorganized!

Missers and Bee - any pictures of how the pantry cabinets are organized? I think we will likely end up with a cabinet pantry but I am still not sure about the best organizational approach. The only part of my current closet pantry I will miss is the floor where I store the dog food.

Mine are just rollout shelves. They are adjustable so you can make them any way you like.

Behind the top door is a cabinet with a shelf in it.

I have a pantry closet in my current kitchen and it was the one thing I was so happy to see my husband sledge hammer out during demo! As Bee said, it was constantly a mess. Additionally, ours had no light, it was not quite a walk in but it was bigger than a wall closet. It took up an entire 4 foot corner of my kitchen. Items constantly expired as items got lost in the abyss. Looking forward to a pantry cabinet with roll outs in my new kitchen configuration.

We have a pantry cab that pulls out. 2 of the shelves come out with the door, and there are 2 more in the middle that roll out as needed.
If I had a deeper space, I'd do a closet, but at only 2 feet deep the ability to pull out shelves (without first opening a door that could get left open) is nice. Ours is from Ikea, so you may be able to just get the guts there and put a matching door to your kitchen on to save some money.

The bottom are roll out shelves and the tops are regular adjustable shelves. The cabinet on the left is one big one with two doors so the roll out shelves are huge. Nothing organized yet because the contractor is still working. Hopefully this weekend I'll be able to starting lining shelves and putting stuff away. :D
